2026 World Cup Rule Changes You Need to Know
FIFA has introduced some rule changes ahead of the 2026 World Cup. One of the most talked-about updates is the so-called "Prestianni Law," which will penalize players who cover their mouths during on-field arguments. FIFA is also clamping down on time-wasting with strict new countdowns, with players having just five seconds to take throw-ins after the referee's whistle. Goalkeepers will also need to act fast on goal kicks; if they take too long, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick. Additionally, substituted players must exit the pitch within 10 seconds to keep the game moving. The VAR's role is expanding as well. The video assistant will now be able to correct mistaken identities and intervene if a second yellow card is wrongfully issued. VAR can also intervene and review corner kick decisions, as long as it's done quickly. Finally, to combat player fatigue, FIFA has confirmed two mandatory hydration breaks per match.
