The case for downsizing Illinois’ Institutional Care Centers
For months, Lee Enterprises along with Capitol News Illinois and ProPublica have reported on problems inside a state-run developmental center in southern Illinois. In response, the state said it would be moving about half of the residents of Choate Developmental Center into community settings or other state-run centers. Our latest reporting takes a look at cases of patient abuse and neglect in some of these other centers. In response to our reporting, state officials said that they are working to make their facilities safer, such as by training staff on how to report abuse, and installing cameras. But one expert we spoke to says Illinois should be looking to downsize the number of facilities it operates.
