LONDON — The Church of England accused Sony Corp. on Saturday of using an English cathedral as the backdrop to a violent computer game and said it should be withdrawn.
The church said Sony did not ask for permission to use Manchester cathedral and demanded an apology.
The popular PlayStation 3 game, "Resistance: Fall of Man," shows a shootout with hundreds of people killed inside the cathedral. Church officials called Sony's alleged use of the building "sick" and sacrilegious.
A spokesman for the Church of England said a letter will be sent to Sony Monday. If the church's requests for an apology and withdrawal of the game are not met, the church will consider legal action.
A Sony spokeswoman told The Associated Press Saturday that the company was looking into the matter.

But David Wilson, a Sony spokesman, told The London Times: "It is game-created footage, it is not video or photography. It is entertainment. ... It is not based on reality at all. Throughout the whole process we have sought permission where necessary."
