OSLO, Norway - Tucsonan Bernard Lagat broke the American record in the 5,000 meters Friday at the Diamond League's first visit to Oslo.
Lagat finished third in 12 minutes 54.12 seconds. The two-time Olympic medalist beat the mark of 12:56.27 set by Dathan Ritzenhein last year.
Also in the meet, Asafa Powell ran a wind-aided 9.72 seconds to win the 100.

Ivory Coast may have lost its star and captain, Didier Drogba, when he broke his right arm Friday in a 2-0 warmup victory over Japan.
England captain Rio Ferdinand is done after injuring ligaments in his left knee during practice hours before Drogba was hurt.

Kyle Busch takes pole at Pocono
LONG POND, Pa. - Kyle Busch will start his 200th career Sprint Cup race at the front of the field.
Winner of two of the last four races, Busch turned a lap at 169.485 mph Friday to win the pole for Sunday's NASCAR race at Pocono Raceway and extend a midseason hot streak that has lifted him to second in the points standings.
Now the driver that fans love to hate hopes to parlay his first pole at the 2.5 mile-long Tricky Triangle into a respectable finish. His best finish at Pocono was fourth in 2005, and he hasn't finished higher than 16th over the last two years.
• In Fort Worth, Texas, Todd Bodine stayed in front for two late restarts, including a green-white-checkered finish, to become a six-time winner in the NASCAR Trucks Series at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday night. Johnny Sauter finished second in his Chevrolet, ahead of polesitter Austin Dillon.
• In Fort Worth, Texas, Ryan Briscoe, who led 160 laps at Texas last summer before Penske teammate Helio Castroneves overtook him after two late cautions, earned the pole with a lap of 215.273 mph on Friday. It is his second pole this season and 10th of his career.
Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti starts on the outside of the front row. The last two Indy winners have also won at Texas the same year - Castroneves last year and Ganassi driver Scott Dixon in 2008.

Wildcats tie in rugby opener
The Arizona Wildcats' Sevens team opened the National Collegiate Invitational Rugby Tournament with a 5-5 tie against Army in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday.
The Cats will face Navy today at 8:30 a.m., and then follow that with their third pool-play game against ASU at 11:30 a.m.
• Tangela Smith scored on a layup with 15.8 seconds left and the host Phoenix Mercury held off two last-second chances by the Los Angeles Sparks for a 90-89 victory Friday night.
• Florida International's Garrett Wittels extended his hitting streak to 55 games in a 17-3 loss to Texas A&M on Friday in the opening game of the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional. With a sixth-inning double, the sophomore moved within three of matching Robin Ventura's Division I record set 23 years ago.
• Manny Pacquiao, a newly elected congressman from the Philippines, accepted his third Fighter of the Year award Friday night in New York, while his trainer Freddie Roach was honored for the fourth time by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
