to participate in the third annual Global STEM Talent Summit at Gallup
World Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on April 28, 2016. This year’s
event kicks off STEMconnector’s new three-year strategic plan that
activates private sector collaboration to mitigate the STEM workforce
shortage. The summit will bring together leaders in business, education
and government to explore models to address talent development with a
focus on emerging markets that offer high growth potential for
multi-national corporations.
As part of the summit’s executive panel discussion on “Professional
Development Models for Retaining High-Skill Workers,” Apollo Education
Group’s chief professional development officer Steve Rae will address
opportunities for organizations to strategically execute experiential
learning and performance management programs to build and retain a STEM
workforce. During the summit Rae will also unveil details of a position
piece on experiential learning and professional development, urging
employers to act now and begin the process of meaningful talent
development within their organization and industry.
“Despite the global focus on STEM education, significant talent
shortages persist around the world, and employers are feeling the
pressure to find and keep employees with the right mix of hard and soft
skills,” said Rae. “Retention and workforce development are especially
critical in STEM fields; organizations that want to be competitive must
make the commitment to integrate learning into the corporate culture,
and that has to go beyond treating professional development as a ‘nice
to have.’”
“Many visionary business leaders today have STEM backgrounds,” said Ruth
Veloria, executive dean for University of Phoenix School of Business.
“STEM and business skills cannot be mutually exclusive; organizations
need diverse workers who understand how STEM and business intersect.
University of Phoenix is committed to working with organizations like
STEMconnector to develop a pipeline of STEM-educated professionals who
can apply their talent to innovate global business.”
The summit will also mark the launch of the“Good Jobs” report,
STEMconnector’s “100 Leaders in STEM” report and a STEM Global Talent
Hub. These industry resources are designed to change the global
conversation around the STEM talent gap and motivate action by providing
key industry insights and resources to support employers.
“Apollo Education Group will use the STEMconnector summit to share best
practices in talent development with major employers around the world to
build, educate and train their workforces,” said Greg Cappelli, chief
executive officer of Apollo Education Group. “As the knowledge required
for professional and business success becomes more technical and more
varied, it is critical that education works with business to prepare
global STEM thought leaders across major corporations to keep our
economy globally competitive.”
Employers at the 2016 Global STEM Talent Summit represent the
significant worldwide economic power of corporations coming together to
execute a three-year commitment to helping prepare the next generation
of talent to drive innovation and economic growth.
