4G speeds arrive in Tucson today for Verizon Wireless customers.
Verizon's 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network launches here today in an area bounded by Interstate 10 on the west, Harrison Road on the east, Sunrise Drive on the north and Valencia Road (including Tucson International Airport) on the south.
Customers need 4G-enabled devices to use 4G LTE services, although phones that use 3G service will continue to work just as well.
The network allows Web surfing, file downloading and sharing of photos and music at speeds up to 10 times faster than before.
4G LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink, Verizon said in a news release.
Tucson is one of 15 urban areas in 11 states where Verizon is extending 4G starting today.
