Today, Don Guerra of Barrio Bread took home the James Beard Award for outstanding baker. In February, two Tucson chefs, Maria Mazon and John Martinez, were named semifinalists. Though they didn't make it to the finals, here's a bit more about them.

Tucson is in the middle of a desert, and while I fully support our local farmers as much as possible, farming in Arizona has its challenges. In most cases, the climate is unsuitable for growing food crops, but it’s perfect for raising cattle," writes Tucson chef Ryan Clark.
