Hansen's Sunday Notebook: New NCAA rule means more playing

  • May 16, 2015
  • May 16, 2015 Updated May 16, 2015

Star sports columnist Greg Hansen offers his opinion on recent sports news.

Fewer timeouts should lead to more time playing, not waiting

Fewer timeouts should lead to more time playing, not waiting

The NCAA quietly chopped two timeouts from each men’s basketball game last week, one for each coach in the second half, which could be, what, about six minutes saved?

It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s a step toward making the game more enjoyable for those who buy tickets at McKale Center or watch on TV.

At last season’s Arizona-Gonzaga game, 10 timeouts were called in the first 30 minutes. Then this happened:

TV timeout at 7:58.

Arizona timeout at 3:57.

TV timeout at 3:32.

Arizona timeout at 1:44.

Gonzaga timeout at 1:13.

Arizona timeout at 0:40.

Gonzaga timeout at 0:10.

Gonzaga timeout at 0:09.

And then the game went into overtime when another TV timeout and two more team timeouts were called. Total: 21 timeouts in a 45-minute game.

Worse, the game was stopped to shoot foul shots eight times in that stretch.

One thing the NCAA pledged to do last week was empower referees to end the dawdling and impromptu team huddles and player rituals that can take up to 10 seconds per shot — that sometimes require about a minute to get a player to the foul line and complete a simple free throw.

TV programmers, and especially the Pac-12 Networks, allocate two-hour windows for men’s college basketball. The games rarely end in less than 2:10. The rule changes should help shorten games that have become cluttered with too much wasted time.

And it wasn’t just the Arizona-Gonzaga game.

The UA-ASU game in Tempe had 17 timeouts, including seven in the final 7:56. The Arizona-UCLA game at the Pac-12 tournament was a 17-timeout marathon, including three occasions in which UCLA coach Steve Alford and Arizona’s Sean Miller called a timeout within 30 seconds of a scheduled TV timeout, which had the effect of creating a nine-minute lull in the action.

The NCAA has now abolished those double timeout stoppages.

As for diminishing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds, its effect is likely to be minimal. The big change came in 1993-94 when the shot clock was reduced from 45 to 35 seconds. Arizona’s scoring jumped from 83 to 89 points a game that season.

It’s a different game now. Most teams average close to 66 possessions a game. Maybe it’ll be 68 possessions now, but perhaps the rest of the game will move at a quicker pace.

To get NBA shot, McConnell will need team to take chance

To get NBA shot, McConnell will need team to take chance

Three times while watching the NBA combine last week, I heard NBA personnel asked what they were looking for. All three said “shooters.” Another said the days of a “traditional point guard” are over in the NBA. Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd said, “You’ve got to be able to shoot.” That same day, Arizona point guard T.J. McConnell went scoreless. In that setting, his five-assist performance seemed meaningless. But all it takes is for one team, one coach, to like McConnell’s intangibles. Former Gonzaga guard David Stockton played in the NBA last season, a triumph of intangibles over statistics.

No vacation for UA's Miller

No vacation for UA's Miller

Sean Miller’s summer won’t include much of a vacation. As head coach of USA Basketball’s U19 team, he will be occupied from June 12 to July 5, first in Colorado and then in Greece. The NCAA-approved summer recruiting/evaluation periods are July 9-12 and again July 15-19 and July 22-26. It’s the same type of schedule Lute Olson kept when coaching for USA Basketball from 1984 to 1986 when he won the world championship with a roster that included Steve Kerr and Sean Elliott.

Poll respondents approve of Miller

Poll respondents approve of Miller

The Public Policy Polling company, a national firm based in Raleigh, North Carolina, last week polled Arizonans on a variety of sports topics. It asked respondents if they approved/disapproved of Miller and UA football coach Rich Rodriguez. Miller was approved 61 to 5 and RichRod 51 to 11. ASU’s Todd Graham was approved 45 to 12. Respondents were quizzed about the hiring of new ASU basketball coach Bobby Hurley; 73 percent said they had no opinion.

UA decathlete faces hurdles in title run

UA decathlete faces hurdles in title run

When Pac-12 decathlon champion Pau Tonnesen, an Arizona junior, gets to the NCAA championships next month in Eugene, Oregon, his road to the national title will be difficult. Georgia’s Garrett Scantling is the favorite; he has scored as high as 8,232 this season. Wisconsin’s Zach Ziemek is next at 7,964 and Tonnesen is third at 7,823. If Tonnesen wins the NCAA title, it would make Arizona the first school with four decathlon champs: Jake Arnold won in 2006 and 2007; Klaus Ambrosch won in 1998; Derek Huff won in 1989.

Ironwood Ridge grad Collins hired by Pac-12

Ironwood Ridge grad Collins hired by Pac-12

Sean Collins was a good basketball player at Ironwood Ridge High School, who sought part-time work in the media relations office as an Arizona freshman five years ago. Much like many who worked under now-retired Tom Duddleston in the UA sports information business — many of whom are now working in the NBA, Pac-12 and at various NCAA precincts — Collins started at the bottom and worked his way up. Collins was especially effective while working for UA track coaches Fred Harvey and James Li. Last week, Collins was hired by the Pac-12 from a field of 141 applicants and will begin work in the league’s San Francisco office in August. Well done.

Salpointe's Hinton places third

Salpointe's Hinton places third

Salpointe Catholic sophomore D.J. Hinton finished third in the Division II state 100-meter final last week, running in 10.82 seconds. The state record is 10.33, set in 2009 by former UA/ASU football player and sprinter Ryan Milus.

AIA doesn't show Desert Christian respect it deserves

When Desert Christian High School’s baseball team played in the Division I state semifinals last week, seeking its third straight state championship, they were assigned to play at the Goodyear Sports Complex, where the Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds play spring training games. But the AIA put coach Grant Hopkins’ team on an auxiliary workout field, and sentenced them to play at 11 a.m., on a field that hadn’t been groomed and had some dead grass. It wasn’t the right way to treat any high school playoff team in any sport.

Arizona’s six-time NCAA swimming champion Kevin Cordes will begin his pro career next week at the Mel Zajac International in Vancouver, British Columbia. It will be the start of Cordes’ training that he hopes will lead to the 2016 Rio Olympics as America’s leading swimmer in the breast stroke.

Ex-UA champ Subirats making comeback

Ex-UA champ Subirats making comeback

Albert Subirats, who won three individual NCAA swimming championships at Arizona in 2007 and 2008, is making a comeback. At 28, Subirats hopes to make his third Olympic team for Venezuela. He finished sixth Friday in the 100 butterfly at the 2015 Pro Swim Series in Charlotte, North Carolina, a second behind third-place Michael Phelps. Also making a comeback is ex-UA All-American Lara Jackson, a former American record holder in the 50 freestyle; Jackson is competing in Charlotte this weekend.

Former Wildcats on 'Let's Make a Deal'

Former Wildcats on 'Let's Make a Deal'

Former UA NCAA championship swimmers Simon Burnett and Whitney Myers Burnett were on “Let’s Make a Deal” last week. Simon won a $2,800 outdoor entertainment theater. He gave host Wayne Brady a mini-swimming suit in exchange. Simon and Whitney now operate the BOSS swimming/training school near Los Angeles. Whitney, the 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year, graduated from the USC Medical School last week and will be a physician’s assistant.

Former Tucsonans win conference championship at Indiana State

Former Tucsonans win conference championship at Indiana State

Two of the leading softball players in Pima College history, Sabino second baseman Aubre Carpenter and Sahuarita pitcher Yvette Alvarez, helped Indiana State win the Missouri Valley Conference tournament last week. They are playing in an NCAA regional in Columbia, Missouri. Carpenter is ISU’s starting second baseman and Alvarez is the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation.

St. Augustine's Leon wins second Junior Olympics

St. Augustine High School freshman Angel Leon won his second consecutive National Junior Olympics All-Around championship last week in Daytona Beach, Florida. Leon won the 14-year-old title and now begins training toward a college scholarship under Gymnastics World coach Yoichi Tomita with an eye toward the 2020 Olympics.

Ex-Wildcats highlight U.S. Open qualifier field

About 15 of Tucson’s top golfers are scheduled to be in the field for the U.S. Open local qualifier Wednesday at Sewailo Golf Club. Three players from a field of about 80 will advance to sectional qualifying. Among those in the field are Eric Rustand, who played on four global golf tours after graduating from BYU; former U.S. Amateur contender David McDaniel; Jake Rogers, who succeeded in the qualifying process and played in the 2007 U.S. Open; and ex-UA golfers Brian Prouty and Jonathan Khan, who have been on pro satellite tours in recent years.

Salary market rising in Pac-12

Salary market rising in Pac-12

When the Utah Utes hired a new women’s basketball coach last week, they paid Lynne Roberts $285,000 per year. That raises the salary market in the Pac-12. Arizona pays sixth-year coach Niya Butts $210,000. Roberts coached at Pacific last year.

Byrne likely won't leave UA for home

Byrne likely won't leave UA for home

The Oregonian last week listed 10 possible replacements for Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis, who was essentially asked to resign last week. The newspaper’s first pick: Arizona AD Greg Byrne, who worked at OSU in the mid-1990s and grew up in nearby Eugene. His wife, Regina, grew up in Junction City, which is about 25 miles from Corvallis. It’s unlikely the Beavers have the overall appeal and the money — Byrne will receive a minimum of $3.5 million from a UA booster’s investment plan in 2021 — to get Byrne back home.

Mountain View grad Spraker flourishing at Quincy College

Mountain View grad Spraker flourishing at Quincy College

Mountain View High School grad Graham Spraker has flourished at Division II Quincy College. The 6-foot-4-inch right-hander was 5-1 with a Great Lakes Valley Conference-leading 2.12 ERA through Friday, helping the Hawks to the NCAA Division II regionals.

My two cents: Wildcats' drop-off not helping Lopez

My two cents: Wildcats' drop-off not helping Lopez

It has been difficult to watch Arizona’s baseball struggles, and it hit bottom Friday when two UCLA pitchers combined to pitch a no-hitter, the first against Arizona in 44 years.

Since winning the national championship in 2012, Arizona has gone (through Friday) 36-52 in the Pac-12, never finishing higher than sixth, never cracking .500.

You can find fault in a lot of things, but as with most declining teams in college sports, it can be traced to ineffective recruiting. Arizona just doesn’t have enough quality pitching to be a contender or a playoff team.

If you are a fan of UA coach Andy Lopez, 61, the trend doesn’t look good. The three pillars of UA baseball history all reached an end when they reached their 60s.

Pop McKale coached his last UA game at 62. He only won 12 games that year. Frank Sancet coached his last UA game at 64. He lost 20 games for the first time in school history that season. Jerry Kindall coached his last Wildcats game at 61. His final three Arizona teams went 7-23, 6-24 and 7-23 in the Pac-10.

Lopez has earned the benefit of the doubt over a mostly-terrific UA career. But for the first time, you wonder if he can beat the trend and make another run at the College World Series.
