Hansen's Sunday Notebook: Wildcats the hunted now, and that's good

  • Oct 3, 2015
  • Oct 3, 2015 Updated Oct 4, 2015

Star sports columnist Greg Hansen offers his opinion on recent sports news.

Wildcats the hunted now, and that's a good thing

Wildcats the hunted now, and that's a good thing

The most telling item I read from Sean Miller’s Friday media day transcript was this: “(The Pac-12) coming after us is a good thing.”

Who isn’t “coming after” Arizona? After a long period of stagnation, in which Arizona re-established itself as the league’s power broker, competition is as strong as any time since the late 1990s.

The race is on.

On Friday, as Cal began its practice sessions, coach Cuonzo Martin said: “If you have talent, you’re in the ballpark to do special things.”

Cal has its most talented roster since 1997 and spent $12 million in the offseason to help turn stodgy Haas Pavilion into a more modern facility. It finally has modern video and message boards.

Utah last week unveiled its $36 million basketball facility: 90,000 square feet of splendor. The Utes, like Cal, have a Top 25 roster, a potential conference champion.

“I honestly feel like we’ve won the national championship,” Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said during the grand opening celebration at Huntsman Center. “We can cut the nets down and celebrate.”

Arizona’s competition is quietly hoping that Miller’s recruiting Class of 2016, which currently is empty, stays that way. On Friday, Miller said “the hay doesn’t enter the barn until April.”

Can you imagine the stress inside McKale Center? Recruiting is always stressful; when you get to October and there’s no hay in the barn, it’s worrisome no matter how well you’ve recruited in the past.

Ten years ago, Arizona went deep in to a recruiting cycle with just a single commitment. That was Fendi Onobun, who was a bust. The Wildcats were then shut out until late September 2004. That’s when Seattle forward Marcus Williams became that group’s second commitment. He was followed in early October by Memphis guard J.P. Prince.

On paper, Williams, Onobun and Prince were ranked as highly as any threesome in the country. By the time they left Arizona, the UA program was in tatters and Lute Olson was gone. Prince finished at Tennessee, Onobun was an end-of-the-bench sub and Williams played in the NBA D-League after two reasonably good seasons at UA.

There is no science nor accurate timetable to basketball recruiting.

Any UA fan about to panic about Miller’s empty Class of 2016 should remember the Class of 2009. The five-man class didn’t get its first commitment (Kyryl Natyazhko) until April 2009. But Miller then added Solomon Hill, Derrick Williams, MoMo Jones and Kevin Parrom in a two-month blur.

UA basketball was saved.

Miller’s outlook improved on Saturday when Michigan State got a commitment from top-10 wing recruit Miles Bridges. That would seem to remove the UA’s top competition from the chase for top- 10 prospect Josh Jackson, also a wing, who has listed Michigan State and Arizona among his leading choices.

Former UA teammates Johnson, Pierce part of new documentary

Former UA teammates Johnson, Pierce part of new documentary

In Jason Johnson’s two productive years as Arizona’s starting quarterback, 2001 and 2002, he threw for 5,674 yards and 35 touchdowns. He was one of the few positive elements of the John Mackovic years.

In 2001, Johnson won the Woody Hayes Award as the top scholar-athlete in college football. Then he really started to roll.

As the producer/photographer/videographer for his own Seattle-based company, Jason Ryan Creative, Johnson has worked for ESPN, MLB, NFL and Major League Soccer.

His current project is one of his best and most personal. He just completed a six-part series on Long Beach Poly High School’s football team, an HBO, “Hard Knocks”—style series in which he follows the Jackrabbits through training camp and their September schedule.

The hook to the series is that Long Beach Poly’s coach is Johnson’s Arizona teammate, linebacker Antonio Pierce, who went on to become a standout linebacker for the New York Giants.

USA Football is underwriting Johnson’s series on Long Beach Poly. You can watch it on You Tube, Hudl, at maxpreps.com and on stack.com, which had more than a million views of an early episode.

“Antonio is so great with the kids,” Johnson told me. “It’s really interesting to see his transition from player to coach and how he relates to the players.”

Pierce somehow makes it work even while flying to New York once a week as part of his NFL analyst job with ESPN. His son, De’Andre, is a star safety on the team; he has already been offered a scholarship by Boise State.

All episodes are 12 minutes in length.

Gymnast Williams Lam to be honored by Sabino

Gymnast Williams Lam to be honored by Sabino

Among those to be honored Friday night at the Sabino High School Sports Hall of Fame ceremony will be Jamie Williams Lam, one of the elite athletes in Tucson history. She was a four-time state champion gymnast for the Sabercats, emerging from the Tumbleweeds gymnastics program under Regina Mueller-Martin. Williams then was a regular on three UCLA national championship teams (2001, 2003 and 2004). At Sabino, Lam was a 4.0 student and the class valedictorian. She is now a physician’s assistant, a wife and mother living in Denver. Well done.

Another of Mueller-Martin’s top gymnasts, Sahuarita High School senior Dianne Soria-Galvarro, will be competing in the world gymnastics championships next month in Glasgow, Scotland. Soria-Galvarro has dual citizenship, U.S. and Bolivia, and will compete for Bolivia.

Salpointe's 2015 Hall of Fame class one of its best

On Friday night, Salpointe Catholic honored its 2015 Hall of Fame class, one of its best. It included Web.com golfer Brian Prouty, who became a standout at Arizona, and 1997 state championship game point guard Fern Tonella, who went on to lead Davidson to the NCAA tournament. Tonella, who now has dual citizenship in the U.S. and England, works for a financial data and software company in the UK.

Catch up with the Hills

Catch up with the Hills

On the road to the UA-Stanford football game, I was privileged to bump into Collier Hill, a former Tucson assistant police chief, and his son, also named Collier, a senior engineer at Raytheon Missile Systems. They were outfitted in UA football gear. They joined Mr. Hill’s youngest son, Corey Hill, in Palo Alto for the game. Corey Hill graduated from Stanford with a finance degree and was a starting cornerback for the Cardinal in the 1990s, earned a master’s at Arizona, and now lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He is an international marketing expert for Nike. Both of Collier’s sons played on Jeff Scurran’s powerhouse teams at Sabino.

Wildcats look to change fortunes vs. Stanford in lopsided rivalry

When Arizona’s No. 17 women’s soccer team plays host to No. 5 Stanford at 11 Sunday morning, it’ll be a chance to end an 0-9 streak against the Cardinal. The last eight Arizona-Stanford games have seen the Cardinal ranked, in order, No. 2, No. 2, No. 1, No. 1, No. 1, No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4. Arizona is 2-18 in its not-so-close rivalry with the Cardinal.

Wildcat great Kerr turns 50

Wildcat great Kerr turns 50

Steve Kerr turned 50 last week. Doesn’t seem possible. Next thing you know, Sean Elliott will turn 50 on Feb. 2, 2018. Where did all the years go?

Ex-Cat Ashley has stiff competition to make team

Ex-Cat Ashley has stiff competition to make team

Ex-UA forward Brandon Ashley is one of 20 players in the Dallas Mavericks training camp. His competition at small/power forward is overwhelming. Not only do five players at his position have long NBA experience, the Mavs signed Ohio Bobcat grad Maurice Ndour, an undrafted free agent forward, to a guaranteed contract after watching him in the summer league. Ashley is almost sure to open this year for the NBA D-League’s Texas Legends.

Former Wildcat Jerrett faces difficult task

Former Wildcat Jerrett faces difficult task

Ashley’s Class of 2012 recruiting mate Grant Jerrett faces similar long odds in his attempt to make the Utah Jazz roster. Jerrett, however, has is guaranteed about $940,000 from the Jazz this season, whether he is sent to the D-League or released.

Ex-UA standout Dosty watches alma mater

Ex-UA standout Dosty watches alma mater

Whitney Dosty, a former volleyball standout at Salpointe and the UA (2006-10), was back at McKale Center last week watching her alma mater beat No. 22 Oregon. Dosty has played four seasons of professional volleyball in places like Azerbaijan and South Korea. She said she probably won’t play this season because of a foot injury.

Ex-Caballero Thomas picks up commitment from Salpointe's Dorame

Flowing Wells High School grad Jeff Thomas, head football coach at the University of Puget Sound, was back in Tucson for a wedding recently. While here, he got a recruiting commitment from Salpointe receiver/rusher Zach Dorame.

Tucsonan Abdirahman a favorite in USA 10-mile

Tucsonan Abdi Abdirahman won the USA 10-mile championship in 2005 and 2009, and is one of the favorites Sunday in the 10-mile finals in Minneapolis; one of his Tucson training partners, Bernard Lagat is not running but will be part of the USATF television broadcast team.

Sahuaro grad Verdugo awarded as Dodgers' top minor-leaguer

Sahuaro grad Verdugo awarded as Dodgers' top minor-leaguer

The Los Angeles Dodgers last week named former Sahuaro outfielder Alex Verdugo their 2015 Branch Rickey Award winner for position players. It is the Dodgers’ annual award for their top minor-league player. Verdugo hit .356 from June through August in Class A. It is the fourth consecutive year a Tucson player has won an organization’s minor-league player of the year award. In 2014, ex-UA outfielder Johnny Field was honored by the Tampa Bay Rays; in 2013, former UA and Cienega High third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean was similarly honored by the Cincinnati Reds; and in 2012, ex-Sunnyside/Pima College outfielder Stefen Romero was the Seattle Mariners’ top prospect.

PCC basketball coach Peabody has promising roster

PCC basketball coach Peabody has promising roster

Coach Brian Peabody’s Pima College men’s basketball team began competition Saturday in the ACCAC Jamboree in Phoenix. They will play Hillcrest Prep in a practice game next Saturday at PCC. Peabody has recruited an unprecedented front line at Pima: 7-foot-1-inch center Ryan Festa of Phoenix; 6-9 Damon Dubots of Southern California; 6-7 Justice Martion of Seattle; and 6-7 Justin Bessard of Calabasas, California, to help make the Aztecs an ACCAC contender. Peabody’s roster includes ex-Catalina Foothills standout Dakota Kordsiemon. Very promising.

Arizona volleyball will have to overcome challenging schedule

Arizona volleyball will have to overcome challenging schedule

As Dave Rubio’s No. 14 volleyball program contends for its 18th NCAA tournament berth in 24 years, the road ahead is one of obstacles. The Pac-12 did Rubio no favors: It bungled Arizona’s schedule by forcing the Wildcats to play on Thanksgiving eve at 8 p.m., at Oregon State, and then travel home on Thanksgiving before playing a 3 p.m. Friday Territorial Cup game against Arizona State. I’m guessing Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott won’t be missing Thanksgiving dinner with his family that week.

Ex-Wildcat Rooks' daughter being recruited

Ex-Wildcat Rooks' daughter being recruited

Khayla Rooks, an all-state-caliber post player at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California, is being recruited by Colorado, Washington State and Oregon State so far. The 6-1 junior is the daughter of Arizona’s 1990s All-Pac-10 post Sean Rooks. She has an offer from San Diego State.

My two cents: New bowl game must have more of a local flavor

My two cents: New bowl game must have more of a local flavor

The best chance for the first Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl to become relevant is for New Mexico and UTEP to qualify for and be paired in the Dec. 29 game at Arizona Stadium.

The Lobos haven’t played in a bowl game since 2007. UTEP has played in one bowl game since 2010. About the only way more than 15,000 people will be in the seats for that day’s 5 p.m., kickoff is for UTEP and UNM fans to drive to Tucson by the thousands.

The newest bowl game, of which Tucson attorney Ali Farhang and former Amphi and Stanford running back star Jon Volpe helped to create, still needs to establish more of a local presence.

Currently, the day-to-day operation of the game is handled by Alan Young, of the Phoenix-based Arizona Sport and Entertainment Commission. The more Tucson blood in this game, the better.
