Hansen's Sunday Notebook: Revamped roster revives Cats

  • Apr 25, 2015

Star sports columnist Greg Hansen offers his opinion on recent sports news.

Zeus' return, Tollefsen's choice make Arizona team to beat

Zeus' return, Tollefsen's choice make Arizona team to beat

Sean Miller’s roster management skills are so exemplary that in the space of 24 hours last week he “gained” two exceptionally tall players who have combined to score 1,957 points in Division I basketball.

Arizona’s only unexpected loss since New Year’s Day was freshman power forward Craig Victor, who has scored 25 points in college basketball. He is now at LSU.

The two unexpected gains are 7-foot Kaleb Tarczewski and San Francisco’s 6-10 Mark Tollefsen. That’s a trade you make every day: Zeus and Tollefsen for Craig Victor. It’s a gain of 1,932 points.

Don’t weep for Miller. No one in the Pac-12 is.

Even though he lost bigs Brandon Ashley and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, Miller has the league’s top rim protection and its deepest frontcourt.

And almost nobody in college basketball has a surplus of talented wing players to exceed those at Arizona for the 2015-16 season: Ray Smith, Allonzo Trier; Gabe York and Kadeem Allen. That’s Kentucky-deep.

Miller already has the top Class of 2016 big-man recruit on the West Coast, 6-foot-10-inch T.J. Leaf, a five-star prospect who last week was named U-T San Diego’s Player of the Year. On Friday, Miller flew to Indianapolis to scout/evaluate 6-8 Vance Jackson, a four-star prospect from Los Angeles’ St. John Bosco High School. Earlier in the week, Miller was in Georgia to visit the nation’s No. 2 point guard prospect, Kobi Jordan Simmons.

The point is: exceptional players leave Arizona every year. But almost nobody in the game is as well-prepared for those losses as Sean Miller.

Of all the non-seniors on Arizona’s 2014-15 roster, Tarczewski’s return, while unexpected, was the most pivotal. He is the top defensive presence in the Pac-12.

His decision to play a final season at Arizona changes everything.

Ianello second UA grad to win conference title as coach

Ianello second UA grad to win conference title as coach

Arizona has won 51 Pac-10/12 championships over the years, and women’s golf coach Laura Ianello is the only Wildcat ever to be a head coach and also play for a Pac-10/12 champion. The then-Laura Myerscough was part of the UA’s 1998, 2000 and 2001 league champions and now has coached the UA to 2010 and 2015 golf titles. The only other ex-Wildcat to coach his alma mater to a Pac-10/12 championship was track/cross-country coach Dave Murray, who ran distances for UA in the late 1960s and coached the UA men when they won track titles and cross-country championships. Ianello, who was a finalist in the 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur, once turned down an opportunity to be an assistant coach at Vanderbilt under ex-UA coach Greg Allen.

Salpointe's Harris qualifies for top junior golf event

Salpointe's Harris qualifies for top junior golf event

Salpointe Catholic freshman Haylin Harris has qualified for five events on the 2015 AJGA Tour, which is generally contested among America’s 40 or 50 top junior golfers. She finished fifth last week in her first AJGA stop, the Aliante Junior All-Star event in Las Vegas. She shot 70-76.

Foothills grad McClure places 2nd in Big East championships

Foothills grad McClure places 2nd in Big East championships

Catalina Foothills grad Erin McClure finished second overall last week in the Big East Women’s Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida. McClure, who shot 77-70-70, led Seton Hall to the Big East team championship and earned an automatic berth in next week’s NCAA Regionals.

Match Play's logistics not up to par

Match Play's logistics not up to par

At the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championships this week in San Francisco, the field will not include those who made big news when the match play event was held at Dove Mountain. Tiger Woods, Luke Donald, Steve Stricker, Geoff Ogilvy, Aaron Baddeley and Stewart Cink are among those not playing at Harding Park. Logistics at Harding Park are even more difficult than they were at Dove Mountain. Spectators will be charged $15 to park 12 miles from the golf course and take a shuttle from the old Cow Palace basketball arena to the golf course.

Top gymnast Mariani in UA’s backyard

Top gymnast Mariani in UA’s backyard

When Arizona athletic director Greg Byrne hires a new gymnastics coach, one of the coach’s first recruiting stops will be to Tucson’s Arizona Dynamics Gymnastics center, where coach Regina Mueller-Martin has one of America’s leading prospects. Sabino High freshman Madison Mariani won the Western Regional All-Around championships last week in San Francisco as a Level 10 performer (that’s the equivalent of a college gymnast) and is likely to be the favorite at the May 16-17 Junior Olympics nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. Mariani is the No. 1 all-around gymnast in her age-group and has won 16 of her last 17 all-around competitions. In the last five years, Mueller-Martin’s gym has produced Utah’s Kassandra Lopez of Amphi; Arizona’s Selynna Felix-Terrazas of Flowing Wells; and currently has Sahuaro’s Natasha Trejo, who has signed with BYU; and Catalina Foothills’ Corinne Belkoff, who has signed with ASU.

Ex-UA coach Ryden consistently had Cats in Top 25

Ex-UA coach Ryden consistently had Cats in Top 25

One thing that didn’t get enough mention when the UA chose to replace 17-year gymnastics head coach Bill Ryden was that the Wildcats have been a consistent Top 25 program; they were No. 17 in the final poll this season. “We have had three Pac-12 individual champions in the last two years,” Ryden told me. “Say what you want about me, but I don’t want those athletes shorted.”

ASU hires Phelps' coach to revive program

ASU hires Phelps' coach to revive program

Two years ago, ASU athletic director Ray Anderson was an NFL vice-president whose annual big moment was standing on the stage during the latter rounds of the NFL draft and introducing special guests and former football stars to keep the TV cameras rolling. On Friday, Anderson made yet another big splash at ASU, hiring swimming star Michael Phelps’ long-time personal coach, Bob Bowman. ASU’s swimming programs have been dreadful for 20 years. Can Bowman turn it around? Bowman was the head coach of a large club program in Baltimore; his energies were almost totally dedicated to Phelps. That will not work in college. You can only play the Phelps card so long.

Tucson High sports HOF to induct 5 members

Tucson High sports HOF to induct 5 members

The Tucson High School “T Club,” and its sports Hall of Fame, will induct five members Thursday at 5:30 p.m. It’s a terrific class, that includes ex-Badger all-star basketball player and state long jump/high jump champion Christine Clark. She just completed her first season as a pro basketball player in Italy, leading Lavezzini Parma with a 14.8 scoring average. Tucson High’s 1965 undefeated state championship football team will be honored on its 50th anniversary. Lute Olson will be the speaker. Information: 520-326-5917.

Dean honored as Southern Arizona's top coach

Dean honored as Southern Arizona's top coach

Cholla High School boys basketball coach Masai Dean received the Dick McConnell Coach of the Year Award last week in a reception held by Southern Arizona prep basketball coaches. Well deserved. Dean was 25-2. The banquet featured many of the top names in Tucson prep basketball coaching history, including state champ coaches Dwight Rees, Jim Ferguson, Brian Peabody and McConnell, and Cochise College basketball coach Jerry Carrillo, who coached the Apaches to his third NJCAA championship tournament this season.

PCC to stage high school all-star basketball games

PCC to stage high school all-star basketball games

Pima College will stage the Southern Arizona high school All-Star basketball games on May 8 at the PCC gymnasium. Former Palo Verde coach David Gin will coach the boys team with Rees, while the girls team will be coached by new Tohono O’odham Community College coach Briana Felix and PCC assistant Abyee Maracigan. Those wishing to play should contact the PCC athletic department.

Santa Rita grad Stoglin released after leading Lebanon

Santa Rita grad Stoglin released after leading Lebanon

After leading the Sagesse basketball club of Beirut with a 29.3 scoring average this season, Santa Rita High grad Terrell Stoglin was released in the middle of the playoffs this month and is now a free agent again. Stoglin has played in Italy, Poland, France, Greece and Ukraine since leaving Maryland in 2012.

Sabino grad Mike completes spring session with Gators

Sabino grad Mike completes spring session with Gators

Former Sabino High tackle Andrew Mike completed his first spring ball session at Florida as the Gators’ No. 3 center. He began spring practice as a right guard. He will be a redshirt freshman in the fall.

Ex-Lancer Alexander pitching well with Briar Cliff

Ex-Lancer Alexander pitching well with Briar Cliff

A.J. Alexander, who was a key Salpointe Catholic pitcher in 2011, took a 6-1 record and a 3.20 ERA into Senior Day Saturday at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. Alexander’s team is bidding to get to the NAIA World Series. His father, Darrell Alexander of Tucson, helped Emporia State (Kan.) win the 1978 NAIA World Series.

Ex-Cat Calhoun leads NJCAA in homers

Ex-Cat Calhoun leads NJCAA in homers

Willie Calhoun, who was an infielder at Arizona a year ago, has hit an NJCAA-leading 27 home runs, has 74 RBIs, and leads the ACCAC with a .462 batting average for Yavapai College. That’s an amazing turnaround. He’ll surely be the Player of the Year in the Arizona junior-college league. He has signed to play next year at Kansas State.

Ex-Pueblo star Lever's skills would play today

Ex-Pueblo star Lever's skills would play today

As I listen and watch NBA playoffs analysts gush about today’s premier guards, I think back to Pueblo High grad Fat Lever. What would they say about him today? In his NBA career, Lever had a 20-point, 20-rebound, 12-assist game against Cleveland in 1987. He also had a 15-point, 13-rebound, 23-assist game against Golden State in 1988. Lever averaged 19 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists for three seasons. Today that would get an NBA player his own line of Nikes.

Arizona athletics' ranking slips

Arizona athletics' ranking slips

In Arizona’s current slip to No. 29 overall in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup rankings — the total excellence of an athletic department — here are some numbers that stick out: The UA men’s tennis team is 1-79 in history against UCLA, 2-80 against USC and 3-66 against Stanford. That’s almost impossible, isn’t it?

Cats won't host Utah or Colorado at home

Cats won't host Utah or Colorado at home

One of the negative variables about expanding the Pac-12 from 10 to 12 is that during the McKale Center 2015-16 basketball season, Arizona won’t play Utah or Colorado in Tucson. But the Wildcats will play Bradley and Long Beach State. That’s life in the big leagues, as Larry Scott calls it.

Pac-12 Networks follows Matthews around campus

Pac-12 Networks follows Matthews around campus

The Pac-12 Networks last week followed UA junior linebacker Jake Matthews around campus, to classes and workouts, for a piece that is planned to run in the football season. The Ironwood Ridge grad is majoring in neurology. One day my line of questioning of him will change from “what do you think about UCLA’s football team?” to “why do my feet hurt?”

Ex-Cat Furyk increases career earnings to $63.4 million

Ex-Cat Furyk increases career earnings to $63.4 million

When ex-UA golfer Jim Furyk won his 17th PGA Tour event last week, his official career earnings increased to $63.4 million. His UA contemporary of the early 1990s, Annika Sorenstam, won 72 LGPA Tour events, for $22.5 million in official money. Do the math.

Former Wildcat Mejia in minor-league limbo

Former Wildcat Mejia in minor-league limbo

Arizona’s 2012 College World Series-winning shortstop Alex Mejia was promoted to Triple-A Memphis last week by the St. Louis Cardinals. He went 2 for 4 in his first start Friday, but was sent down Saturday. Replacing him? Former college teammate Kurt Heyer, a right-handed pitcher.

My two cents: UA center's grade shows hard truth about NFL

My two cents: UA center's grade shows hard truth about NFL

During Arizona’s charmed run to the 2014 Pac-12 South football championship, senior center Steven Gurrola was one of the leading elements.

He was the second-team All-Pac-12 center and a tough match for any opposing linemen, even those at USC and Oregon.

As Gurrola awaits the NFL draft this week, NFL.com released this evaluation of his weaknesses:

“Lacks athleticism … Struggles to win when asked to block on the move. Plays to engage rather than win his block … Below-average balance and core strength. Slows feet through contact on double teams … Stiffness in his lower body kills his anchor against pure bull rushers. Poor mental processing. … Had issues improvising when needed. Hand placement on the move won’t cut it.”

Wow. Talk about tough graders.

Gurrola was an outstanding college center. If NFL.com is correct in its evaluation — if Gurrola has that many flaws – you can imagine how difficult it is to make it in pro football.

Rocket science is easier.
