Hansen's Sunday Notebook: Aging MGM perfect for Pac-12 hoopla

  • Mar 14, 2015
  • Mar 14, 2015 Updated Mar 14, 2015

Star sports columnist Greg Hansen offers his opinion on recent sports news.

MGM's aging arena, Pac-12 hoopla a perfect match

MGM's aging arena, Pac-12 hoopla a perfect match

The MGM Grand Garden Arena is no fresh-faced, hitting-its-prime beauty.

Barbra Streisand performed there as long ago as 1993. Near Arizona’s locker room, a color poster of Jimmy Buffett, singing there in 1996, is on display. Elton John was a relatively young man when he played the MGM Grand in 1997.

The arena has been operating so long that it used to be home to the WAC women’s volleyball championships in the 1990s. The Las Vegas Dustdevils, an indoor soccer team, played a season there 22 years ago.

The seats are old. The infrastructure is dated. Can you imagine all the $13 beer that has been spilled on the metal floors? It is showing its age.

But it has been heaven for the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament.

The Pac-12 drew a straight flush when it moved to Las Vegas in 2013. The timing couldn’t have been better. It coincided with Arizona’s restoration as a championship contender and of the estimated 60,000 tickets sold Thursday through Saturday, UA fans paid for close to 50,000 of them.

On Friday, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said he is considering moving the event across the street, a half-mile as the crow flies, in 2017. That’s when the 20,000 Las Vegas Arena is scheduled to open, a facility that hopes to draw an NHL team as a tenant.

It might be better to retain the intimacy of the MGM Grand, beer stains and all, than to risk an attempt to sell 7,000 more seats per game.

One of the reasons the league tournament failed at Los Angeles’ Staples Center, capacity 18,118, was because the venue was simply too big.

Arizona’s final Pac-12 tournament game at Staples Center drew 11,197 fans. It was the 2012 championship game against Colorado.

And the announced attendance was probably inflated by 2,000 or so.

It was a dreadful place for a conference tournament because there was no central gathering place. There was no “feel” and no buzz. Even in the years when Washington was powerful, winning tournament titles in 2005, 2010 and 2011, you rarely saw any Husky purple because there was no rallying point.

It was too expensive, too hard to get to, too sterile.

That all changed when the Pac-12 moved to MGM Grand in 2013.

I’ve been to Rose Bowls and Super Bowls and Final Fours. Fun, fun, fun. But the Pac-12 tournament is a party plus fun. True, Arizona benefits most because Las Vegas is 410 miles away from Tucson, compared to the 900 miles Oregon fans, and 1,125 miles Washington fans must travel.

But it’s close enough to Stanford, Cal, UCLA, USC, Colorado, Utah and ASU that Arizona doesn’t have an unfair advantage.

I sat high in the stands for the second half of Friday’s Utah-Oregon semifinal game, mixed in with Utes fans who probably bought about 2,000 tickets to the game. They were loud. They stood and shouted for 20 minutes and then spilled into the vast MGM casino after the game. You got the sense they’ll be back year after year.

The new Las Vegas Arena will cost about $400 million. It will be a thing of beauty. I hope the Pac-12 isn’t seduced by its size and the new car smell.

Alford delegated with game on the line

Alford delegated with game on the line

If you get a chance to watch a replay of Friday’s Arizona-UCLA semifinal game, pay attention to the Bruins’ timeout huddle with 1:33 remaining, with Arizona leading 61-59. Assistant coach Ed Schilling did all of the instruction in the huddle as head coach Steve Alford watched. Schilling is a John Calipari disciple from UMass and Memphis who spent his last two seasons before UCLA by coaching a high school team in Indianapolis. In all my years of watching Lute Olson, Mike Montgomery and Ralph Miller — the three leading coaches in Pac-10/Pac-12 history — I never saw one of them give a timeout session over to an assistant coach. The elite coaches just don’t do that.

Commissioner Scott touts 'China initiative'

Commissioner Scott touts 'China initiative'

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott spent considerable time Friday touting his “China initiative” again. Blah, blah, blah. Globalization in college basketball? What a waste of money. Next season, Washington will play Texas in Shanghai. “We’ve got now a season-long coverage of Pac-12 men’s basketball on Look TV in China,” said Scott. On Friday, the commissioner entertained 28 athletic administrators from China at a Pac-12 tournament symposium at which Scott spoke. It would’ve been much more impressive if he had announced a deal with DirecTV or the end of the proliferation of late-night football games and Sunday basketball games.

Ex-Cat Johnson guaranteed pay for play

Ex-Cat Johnson guaranteed pay for play

Nick Johnson was able to attend the Arizona-UCLA game because the Houston Rockets had two days off after a game at Utah and will play Sunday at the L.A. Clippers. Johnson has played 671 minutes for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA D-League this year and 192 minutes for the Rockets. As a UA senior, he played 1,255 minutes. But his foot is firmly in the NBA door; he is being paid $507,336 this season and is guaranteed $845,059 next year.

CDO sophomore Washington smashes discus record

CDO sophomore Washington smashes discus record

Here’s a name to keep in mind the next few years: CDO sophomore Turner Washington. He broke the school’s discus record last week, at 170 feet 10 inches. He is the son of three-time USA Olympic discus thrower Anthony Washington (1992, 1996, 2000) and nephew of Arizona’s 1994 All-Pac-10 lineman Warner Smith. Good genes, huh? CDO’s fence at its discus-throwing area had been 160 feet until Washington began hitting it. The school has now moved it back to about 180 feet.

I-Ridge grad Landrith continuing family tradition

I-Ridge grad Landrith continuing family tradition

Former Ironwood Ridge softball standout Robin Landrith was the starting catcher for Baylor last week when the Bears routed Arizona 9-1. A senior, Landrith is continuing the strong catching tradition of her family. Her father, David Landrith was a UA starting catcher in the early 1980s, and her grandfather Hobie Landrith was a catcher for the Reds, Cubs, Cardinals, Giants, Mets, Orioles and Senators. Robin is hitting .310 in 14 starts this season.

Arizona great Diggins back in baseball

Arizona great Diggins back in baseball

Ben Diggins of Prescott, one of the top baseball recruits ever to enroll at Arizona and the No. 17 overall pick in the 2000 draft, had his post-UA career ended when he blew out his pitching arm in 2002. He reached the big leagues for a season. But after playing beach volleyball in Los Angeles, Diggins is back in baseball. He has been hired by the Dodgers as a scout.

Former Wildcat Barnes throws out first pitch

Former Wildcat Barnes throws out first pitch

Ricky Barnes threw out the first pitch Wednesday at the Phillies-Pirates spring training game in Clearwater, Florida. The UA’s 2002 U.S. Amateur champion then shot a 66 Thursday at Tampa’s Valspar Championship, before falling eight strokes back Saturday. In his seventh full year on the PGA Tour, Barnes has won $5.78 million and is seeking his first Tour victory.

Korcheck's old team preparing for national tournament

Korcheck's old team preparing for national tournament

Before UA senior Matt Korcheck left the media interview room after Senior Day against Stanford, he flashed two thumbs-up at the news his old school, Cochise College, had won a berth in the NJCAA national championships this week in Hutchinson, Kansas. Coach Jerry Carrillo’s Apaches open the tournament Monday against highly ranked Vincennes of Indiana. This will be Carrillo’s third berth in the NJCAA finals. The UA and Salpointe Catholic grad won two epic road games against Mesa College and Central Arizona College to get into the nationals.

Ex-UA assistant Rosborough back at tourney

Ex-UA assistant Rosborough back at tourney

Good to see former UA assistant basketball coach Jim Rosborough back at the Pac-12 tournament. He is now a scout for the Atlanta Hawks, and spent last week evaluating Mountain West Conference and Pac-12 players for the NBA Eastern Conference’s No. 1 team.

Salpointe's Hinton shines at Rivals.com combine

Salpointe's Hinton shines at Rivals.com combine

At the Rivals.com football training combine last week in Phoenix, Salpointe Catholic sophomore receiver/defensive back D.J. Hinton turned heads. Hinton ran the fastest time over 40 yards (4.62 seconds) and had a 32-inch vertical jump, sixth of all prospects. As a Lancers sophomore last fall, Hinton rushed for 147 yards, caught passes for 277 yards and returned kicks for 251 more yards. He projects as one of Tucson’s top college prospects in 2016.

Byrne expands Cats' borders to Nogales

Byrne expands Cats' borders to Nogales

UA athletic director Greg Byrne continues to expand his school’s borders. He has now bought billboard space in Nogales as he did in Yuma, Phoenix and on Arizona’s borders with California and New Mexico. The large Nogales billboard greets those arriving from Mexico saying: “Bienvenidos Arizona Territorio De Los Gatos.”

Ex-Cat Frese coaches team to championship

Ex-Cat Frese coaches team to championship

Compared to the troubles at Arizona’s women’s basketball program, Brenda Frese, a three-year Arizona basketball player who graduated in 1993, coached Maryland to the Big Ten women’s basketball championship and is 30-2 overall this season. Frese, 44, has a 410-135 career coaching record and earns an estimated $1.1 million yearly at Maryland, which averaged 4,885 in home attendance this season.

Reed cashes in with all-important second NFL contract

Reed cashes in with all-important second NFL contract

Sabino High School and UA product Brooks Reed did what most NFL players list as their No. 1 goal: get a second contract. The 2010 All-Pac-10 pass rusher signed with the Atlanta Falcons for $22 million over five years last week. At 28, it’s likely to be Reed’s final contract. He started 52 games in four seasons for the Houston Texans.

Salpointe grad Denny makes all-tournament team

Salpointe grad Denny makes all-tournament team

With 15 points, 11 rebounds and some terrific defense in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament last week, Salpointe grad Talbott Denny was selected to the all-tournament team as the Bisons reached the semis. Denny, a junior at Lipscomb, finished the year with a .513 shooting clip and averaged 5.9 points per game.

Santa Rita grad Stoglin the leading scorer in Lebanon league

Santa Rita grad Stoglin the leading scorer in Lebanon league

Santa Rita grad Terrell Stoglin is the leading scorer in the pro league in Lebanon, at 30.5 points per game. He missed a playoff game last week when he was attacked off the ball, away from the play, by an opposing player, resulting in a brawl that emptied the bleachers and both benches. Stoglin was not injured.

Sunnyside grad Romero batting .333 in Mariners camp

Sunnyside grad Romero batting .333 in Mariners camp

Sunnyside grad Stefen Romero is batting .333 in the Seattle Mariners’ spring training camp but he’s not likely to open the season with Seattle no matter how well he plays in March. After hitting .192 for the Mariners in 72 games last year, Romero was slotted to start the year in Triple-A; the Mariners signed three new outfielders for 2015.

Ex-UA CWS MVP Refsnyder starts strong with Yanks

Ex-UA CWS MVP Refsnyder starts strong with Yanks

Robert Refsnyder is off to a strong start in the New York Yankees’ spring camp. The UA’s 2012 College World Series MVP hit .375 in his first nine games; he’s battling for the second base job with 32-year-old ex-Tucson Sidewinder Stephen Drew, who was 2 for 16 so far this spring at the plate. The Yankees owe Drew a guaranteed $5 million this year, which could decide the job.

UA coach Li accepts job with Team USA

UA coach Li accepts job with Team USA

UA cross country coach James Li is having a busy spring. He has accepted a position with Team USA to coach its women’s cross country team at the world championships March 28 in Guiyang, China, which is his native land.

My two cents: Miller still recruiting, winning during March

My two cents: Miller still recruiting, winning during March

In his busiest month of the year, Sean Miller took time last week to offer Tempe Corona del Sol point guard Alex Barcello a scholarship.

Barcello, who helped the Aztecs go 33-1 overall and win their fourth consecutive state title this year, has also been offered by Virginia, among others. He is teammates with 6-foot-11-inch freshman Marvin Bagley III, who is likely the top basketball prospect in Arizona since Mike Bibby in 1995.

College basketball never ends. On Friday night, Miller’s incoming five-star point guard, Justin Simon, led Brewster Academy of New Hampshire to the national prep school championship and a 34-1 overall mark. Also on Friday, Miller’s top commitment from the class of 2016, five-star power forward T.J. Leaf of El Cajon (Calif.) Foothills Christian High School, completed his season with a 27-point, 14-rebound average.

Pressure? Workload? The alternative is to be like ASU’s Herb Sendek, sent home from Las Vegas by a dreadful USC team. Sendek allowed himself to be photographed sitting, alone, waiting for a plane at a Las Vegas food court.

You’ve got to know the turf better than that. Drive home if you have to. Don’t let them see you suffer.
