I rarely write about well-known blogs, figuring that they're, well, known. But while I've heard about Daily Kos (www.dailykos.com) before, I made my first visit the other day. Wow! It's quite impressive — and a bit overwhelming.
The site belongs to Markos Moulitsas Zúniga, 34, a former Army man. "Kos" (rhymes with "prose") became a lawyer with degrees in philosophy, political science and journalism. Considering his areas of study, it's no surprise that the site, which he maintains from Berkeley, Calif., focuses on the political.
Recent posts have included "Ford makes the right decision" (about Ford Motor Co. continuing to support gay organizations and advertise in gay media), "Is There Any Doubt ScAlito Is an Extremist?" (about Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel Alito) and "Mr. Bush, Your Coalition Is Shrinking."
If those don't tip you off to the site's leanings, perhaps the slogan on the Daily Kos gear will: "Is it 2008 yet?"
People are also reading…
Daily Kos is hugely popular, which seems to be both its biggest strength and weakness. It gets about 20 million unique visits per month, and comments on individual posts can number into the hundreds.
Kos also has a book coming out: "Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots and the Rise of People-Powered Politics."
THE BEST: Posts are very intellectual and informative, and I feel like I actually learned something from reading them. Not always the case in blog-land.
THE WORST: The site is overwhelming, and I don't think the double left-hand rail is helping matters. Tons of posts, tons of links, tons of comments add to the confusion.
ULTIMATELY: If you're a political junkie of a certain persuasion and have time to sort through the many posts and comments, dive on in.
