The Modeens, Tucson's spirited indie-psychedelic rockers, unapologetically mine American rock music from the Monkees to the Yardbirds.
In between some solid, standup covers of classic rockers, they dip into their growing, guitar-driven, '60s-inspired catalog of original material. There's a garage band mentality at work, with admirable guitar riffs driving a bluesy rock sound supported by rough-hewn vocal turns. No matter where you see them - including their regular haunts at Plush, the Sky Bar, Red Room, the Rialto Theatre or Club Congress - you will feel like you are in their living room eavesdropping on an unrehearsed jam session.
The Modeens take their talent and energy to the street for this weekend's 2nd Saturdays Downtown. The band, celebrating lead singer Cristina Williams' birthday, headlines the July installment of the monthly street party.
