Savoy Family makes its Tucson encore
It didn't take long for the Savoy Family Cajun Band to return to Tucson.
Just seven months after its Old Pueblo debut, the musical family of four returns for a Rhythm & Roots Suite 147 gig at Plaza Palomino. The band, which harmonizes a honed-down but hard-core Cajun sound, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Plaza Palomino, 2970 N. Swan Road.
The Savoys began their Cajun beat in 1977 with Marc and Ann Savoy in Louisiana. Their two sons, fiddler and guitarist Joel and accordionist Wilson, tour with Mom and Dad in and out of the country.
The band draws sizable audiences and critical acclaim, including praise from the Los Angeles Times: "The Savoys cover the Cajun spectrum with a dazzling mixture of spiritual joy and virtuoso voltage."

The Savoys have performed in venues such as the Newport Folk Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, the Getty Museum and Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Their music is included on the "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" soundtrack, and they appeared on the PBS series "American Roots."
Friday's show begins with free Cajun dance lessons at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door. It's $10 for students with current student ID.
Rahe returns Saturday for Rhythm & Roots
Rahe is back and ready to wow crowds with her third Tucson appearance - her second in a month.
She returns with illumiNation, a fairly new project that performs acoustic, eclectic world and jazz.
Rahe, a multilingual singer and composer, headlines the Rhythm & Roots' Suite 147 series at 8 p.m. Saturday at Plaza Palomino, 2970 N. Swan Road.
In her performance at last month's Celebrate Tucson concert at Fox Tucson Theatre, Rahe showcased her powerful and original sound, influenced from her native Spain, Brazil and Africa, with American soul and jazz thrown in.
Her February debut album, "Out of the Box," brings multicultural influences from Spain, Japan and the United States - the three countries she has called home.
A saxophone quartet accompanies Rahe with Nadar Nihal Singh Khalsa on alto sax, Sean Johnson on tenor sax, Kevin Shumaker and Max Goldschmid on baritone saxes and Adam Ackermann on drums. Rahe takes care of vocals and nylon-string acoustic guitar.
Independent Music Journalism Altsounds.com raves, "The world has a lot to look forward to as her career jumps to further heights."
Tickets to Saturday's show are $10 in advance at rhythmandroots.org or $12 at the door.
