The French death metal-heads of Gojira will bring their North American tour to Tucson's Rialto Theatre on Monday.
The band is touring to promote its months-old fourth album, "The Way of All Flesh," an angrier, heavier, noisier, more aggressive and arguably more violent disc that reflects the band's growing angst over what it sees as the world's self-destruction, vocalist-guitarist Joe Duplantier told Pitchfork magazine. The album has sold a few thousand copies Stateside since its October 2008 debut at 138 on the U.S. Billboard charts.
The band peddles in crunching guitar riffs married to a throbbing, percussive heartbeat that does much to mask Duplantier's scream-o vocals. It's harsh and jagged and is, according to some critics, finding its way to the top of the heavy-metal heap.
Gojira takes its name from the Japanese pronunciation for Godzilla, although no one in the band can agree on whether it's pronounced "go-hear-ah" or "go-gee-rah" or "go-gee-dah." The band will share the Rialto stage with The Chariot and Car Bomb. The 8 p.m. show is labeled all-ages. Tickets are $19 in advance, $21 the day of the show, through the Rialto, www. rialtotheatre.com

Detroit Cobras do cover songs you most likely never heard
Most cover bands play songs you already know.
The Detroit Cobras take vintage soul tunes you've probably never heard and play them louder and harder than the people who wrote them. They cover songs by Irma Thomas, Otis Redding, Hank Ballard and Solomon Burke, among others.
Over the years, more than a dozen band members have come and gone, but singer and piano player Rachel Nagy, along with guitarist Mary Ramirez, remain constants. The garage band, which was formed in 1994, is touring with the Dex Romweber Duo, made up of former Flat Duo Jets frontman and guitarist Dex Romweber and his sister and drummer, Sara Romweber.
The Detroit Cobras and the Dex Romweber Duo will play at Plush on Tuesday. The show begins at 9 p.m. with a set by local rockers the Mission Creeps.
Admission is $10 in advance and $12 on the day of the show.
