Hi Corbett Field (Time Machine newsletter copy)
- Updated
Hi Corbett Field was built in 1927, though it was originally called Randolph Municipal Baseball Park, according to Arizona Athletics.
The field became the training home of the Cleveland Indians decades later in 1947. The Indians continued spring training at Hi Corbett until 1992 when the Colorado Rockies took over from 1993 to 2010.
Hi Corbett Field was renamed in 1951 after Hiram Steven Corbett, a state legislator and president of the Tucson Baseball Commission, according to Star archives.
Corbett was "instrumental in drawing the Cleveland Indians for spring training and helped get the $32,638 facility built," the Star wrote in 1991.
Beyond Randolph, Reid and Corbett, other names at Reid Park include: Emil Bossard Annex Fields, named after a longtime groundskeeper for the Indians; David Bell bike path, named after a devoted fan of University of Arizona and high school sports who was killed while riding his bike home after a basketball game in 1987; Barnum Hill, named after Willis E. Barnum, who financed the purchase of the land that's now home to Reid Park; and Miko's Corner Playground Dog Park, named after a Tucson Police Department dog who was killed in the line of duty.
