57 years of Arizona's favorite baby names

  • May 16, 2016
  • May 16, 2016 Updated Dec 21, 2017

Using Social Security Administration data, we show the most popular boys' and girls' names in Arizona from 1960 to 2015. We've also included a link to the favorite baby names in Arizona for 2016.

Top boys' names in Arizona

Using Social Security Administration data, we show the most popular boys' names in Arizona from 1960 to 2015.

David, Michael, Robert and John have been perennial favorites, although Robert and John haven't cracked the No. 1 spot in Arizona — they have frequently been No. 2.

Recently popular names like Liam were not on the list of top 100 in the last century.

Graphs of the popularity of these names over time were made for those who were No. 1 at some time since 1960.

Mousing over points on the graph will give details. Blank spots in the lines on the graph indicated that name wasn't in the top 100 at that time.

Top girls' names in Arizona

Using Social Security Administration data, we show the most popular girls' names in Arizona from 1960 to 2015.

Classical favorites like Mary and Lisa faded and dropped out of the top 100 by 2000.

More recent favorites might be traced to popular moves and other media. Isabella and Mia didn't crack the top 100 girls' names in Arizona until such movies as "The Twilight Saga" and "Princess Diaries" came out. These made a bigger impact on girls' names that they did on boys' names.

Graphs of the popularity of these names over time were made for those who were No. 1 at some time since 1960.

Mousing over points on the graph will give details. Blank spots in the lines on the graph indicated that name wasn't in the top 100 at that time.

Mary is a classic as far as names for girls are concerned. It was popular in Arizona in the 1960s. A statue of the Virgin Mary, that residents say "weeps" oil, has attracted thousands of visitors in the last week to an apartment belonging to the Khoury family, in Tarshiha, a small Israeli town near the Lebanon border,Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014. The family says it is most striking when a "tear" seems to roll down the statue's cheek. Parts of the statue appear to be slick with moisture, even after it is wiped off. (AP Photo/Ariel Schalit)
