Some popular names are timeless, staying in style forever, while others eventually fade into obscurity. While many parents want to bestow a trendy or popular name on their child, others may want to chose a name that will be purely unique for their newborn.
For the parents supporting the latter belief, MooseRoots, a genealogy research site powered by Graphiq, determined which names are soon-to-be extinct.
To accomplish this, the analysts used 2015 data from the Social Security Administration to calculate the average annual frequency for all names in every decade since 1930. Then they identified names that saw the largest decrease in frequency (names that were one standard deviation or more away from the inter-decade average) during this current decade — 2010 to 2015. These 50 names have seen the largest decline in popularity compared to their once privileged status and are considered to be on the fast-track to oblivion. The names are ranked from least to most obscure.
Whether you want to select a unique name for your child, or you want to avoid names on this list, find out the top 25 nearly extinct names for both boys and girls.
