The Tucson Citizen photographed the home of the Arthur Grunewald family. The house was a backdrop for many paintings and other works of art, but it was a home first and meant to be lived in.

The Arthur Grunewalds' charming Tudor house rests on an elevated lot on East Third Street. Its formal exterior belied the light, airy atmosphere within. World travelers, the Grunewalds have furnished the house with magnificent paintings and furnishings brought home from numerous trips to Europe and the Middle East.

A painting by Renoir of a girl reading venters the large antiqued mirror above the living room sofa. Reflected in the mirror are an abstract painting (left) by Arthur Samuelson, an American contemporary and Mrs. Grunewald's portrait by the late Hutton Webster (above the mantle).

The gold and white color scheme used in the dining room is repeated in the wallpaper made especially for the front entrance foyer. Pattern in the dining room paper has Greek figures and Greek key design. Upstairs are three bedrooms and the maid's room.

White glazed candelabra by Spode centers the mirror-topped table in the dining room. Table and chairs were antiqued to match the chest (rear). Furniture had belonged to Mr. Grunewald's mother.

The Arthur Grunewalds moved into this lovely two-story Tudor house on East Third street 16 years ago, immediately after World War II when building materials were scarce. Although originally built 30 years ago, the house has needed little alteration to accommodate a family that includes two active teen-aged daughters. The only major changes were the glassing-in of a back porch and the addition of a swimming pool in the patio.

The abstract painting by Samuelson is combined with a director seat and antique French writing desk. Clock on the mantle was bought in London.

Mrs. Grunewald pointed out the serious expressions on the faces of the three children in this painting by the contemporary Italian artist Arturo Piletti.

Draperies on the living room side can be closed, completely shutting sun porch off from the rest of the house. On the left side of the arch is an etching by Vlaminck. Print next to it is by Chagall. The Grunewalds bought the goat rug in Delphi, a small Greek mountain village. Floor to ceiling windows, bought texture of the brick wall (painted white) and beamed ceiling give the room an indoor-outdoor effect.

Bronze by Renoir rests on a pedestal in the glass-enclosed sunporch. Floors of the room are the original cement floors which had been exposed for years to the sun. Mrs. Grunewald swims at least a quarter of a mile daily year around in the 42-foot heated pool. The children, Kathy and Karen, also swim.

Gibson Danes, head of the art department at Yale University, awakened Mrs. Grunewald's interest in art when she was a student and he a professor at Stephens College, Columbia, Mo. After her marriage to Mr. Grunewald, her husband became interested in art, too, and now this small den holds scores of books on the subject. Art in the room includes (from left) a painting by the late Hutton Webster of an old mission, "Moths," by Mac Schweitzer, a Cezanne (in window) and a wood carving of a small child at the beach. On the fireplace mantel (not shown) are a 16th and a 17th century icon and a picture done by the Italian artist Fappiani in colored beeswax.
