Biking and camping are a good combination of outdoor activities for families who want a little adventure.
So, how about a bike camping tour that is also a fundraiser for a local nonprofit?
Bicycle Inter-Community Art and Salvage, aka BICAS, is hosting its second annual bike camping tour weekend to Colossal Cave Mountain Park next weekend — March 7 and 8.
The trek is designed for all ability levels as an introduction to bike touring, for individuals and families. It offers three routes — 65 miles, 30 miles or 15 miles — each one with a SAG (support and gear) vehicle following in case you need water or repairs.
“The 15 mile-route is a good one for families and first-time riders,” said Kristin McRay, education coordinator at BICAS. “Parents would know best the abilities of their children. But, 15 miles is pretty doable for most younger kids.”

If not, children can ride in a side car attached to their parents’ bicycle.
On the day of departure, participants will sign in at BICAS and drop off their bags at their scheduled time, then meet at their designated starting point — depending on route — for a group start. Everybody rides at his or her own pace.
The cost, $55 for anyone over age 13 and $35 for those under the age of 13, includes food, drinks, support and entry into the campsite.
Since it is a fundraiser, part of that money also supports BICAS.
Last year, about 14 riders participated in the inaugural event. This year, at least one family with young children — ages 6 and 7 — has signed up thus far.
“For years, our only fundraiser was our annual art auction, so, now we want this to be a continuous annual event, and we’re hoping it grows,” McRay said.
