Longtime friends Theresa Mary Fischer and April Bourie have separately enjoyed the Tucson Botanical Gardens Luminaria Nights. This year they’re banding together for the tradition.
“Her little boys are so adorable,” Fischer said of Bourie’s 4-year-old twins, Jack and Zane. “Seeing the lights through their eyes is going to be so much fun.”
Now in its 27th year, Luminaria Nights puts a distinctive Southwestern spin on the holidays with candle lights tucked in brown paper bags, live music, decorated trees and, of course, the Big Red-Suited Guy.
Last year, Bourie was able to use Luminaria Nights as an intro to Santa.
“They were able to sit down, and they smiled right away,” she said. “So it was a great dry run with Santa. No stress. He was just there.”

Fischer, a marketing consultant, loves the live music that wafts through the grounds along with the festive décor.
“You turn the corner and there are beautiful things,” she said. “The gardens feel really big at night. It’s my Tucson.”
