Some retirees like to play golf or tennis. Others hike or read books.
Then there's the group of 40 Dove Mountain residents, who buy, train and race horses.
For the last three years, members of the Heritage Highlands Racing Syndicate have put up $100 apiece to buy a horse, which is trained by professional trainer Eddie Tellez.
The horse races at Rillito Park Race Track, 4502 N. First Ave. At season's end, Tellez is given the horse. Any leftover funds and winnings will be donated to the Marana Community Food Bank.
This year's horse, named Jordan Time, placed fourth in two races this season at Rillito Park.
"It's real fun to be able to have an interest in a horse, so when you go down and watch the races it just makes it that much more interesting," said Jeanne Weaver, the horse groomer and one of its co-owners.

"I spent 20 years on the racetrack years ago, and it's nice to be around horses again," said Weaver, who joined the group last season.
The racing season ended Sunday at Rillito, so Tellez will race Jordan Time at tracks in Sonoita and Prescott.
