It started as a small supply of clothing for needy students and was housed in the nurse's office at Prince Elementary School. But by 1983, that informal arrangement was not sufficient to handle the increased need. The Amphitheater Public Schools Clothing Bank was created, and a district building was donated for its use. On Jan. 12, 1984, retired Amphi teacher Doris Nicholson, right, sorted through the donated apparel, along with volunteer Martha Farley. The clothing bank volunteers estimated they had more than 4,000 items on hand, and they made sure that no needy district students or their families were turned away.
