Two women were injured New Year’s Eve when a drunken-driving suspect fleeing from a deputy smashed into their car on Tucson’s west side, officials say.
The incident started about 9 p.m. Tuesday when a deputy looking for a reported impaired driver stopped a pickup driving without lights on and in the wrong lane on West Speedway near North Painted Hills Road, Deputy Tracy Suitt said in a news release.
Shortly after being stopped, the driver, later identified as Alfonso Gutierrez Mateo, 34, got back into the truck and sped off, driving east in the westbound lane of Speedway, Suitt said.
The deputy gave chase and about 1½ miles later, the pickup smashed into the car.
Two women in the car — both in their mid-20s — were injured. One of them remained in critical condition Wednesday, Suitt said.

Gutierrez and the other woman were hospitalized with less severe injuries.
Suitt said Gutierrez is likely to be booked into the Pima County jail on suspicion of aggravated driving under the influence, fleeing from police, criminal damage and other crimes.
