The search for a mascot at Pueblo Magnet High School is winding down, but if you were hoping to see a saguaro running around the football field next year, you're out of luck.
The cactus didn't make the cut during student voting to narrow six mascot options to three.
Also ruled out were the roadrunner and the coyote. Leading the race thus far is the wolf, which has garnered 828 of the more than 1,300 votes cast.
Also still in contention are the puma, with 204 votes, and the dragon, with 127 votes.
The search began last semester in an effort to give students a mascot that can promote school spirit at athletic events.
The school, at 3500 S. 12th Ave., has been without a mascot for more than a decade.

By the mid-1980s, that image was gone, replaced by a more serious American Indian man holding a diploma in one hand and surrounded with symbols of knowledge, including an open textbook and a split atom.
That mascot was eliminated in the 1990s after a number of complaints from community and American Indian groups.
The Student Council is waiting for administrative approval to hold a final vote in February, said Travis Klein, who teaches student government.
If all goes well, the new mascot will begin representing Pueblo in the 2010-11 school year.
Regardless of which mascot will represent the school in the future, Pueblo says students will still be called Warriors.
