The days are getting longer. The grass is getting greener. Birds are chirping and bees are buzzing.
For sports fans, the sights and sounds of spring signify the return of a national pastime — roller derby!
“I am so looking forward to the new season,” says Tucson Roller Derby member Barb Trujillo, aka Barbacide aka NockkaHoDown. “This is my fifth year, and this year Vice Squad is going to kick butt.” On Saturday, all four of the Tucson Roller Derby’s teams will be in action.
In the day’s first bout, the Copper Queens will challenge Iron Curtain. After that bout, Trujillo’s Vice Squad will tangle with last season’s champions, the Furious Truckstop Waitresses.
Last season, only two teams competed at each bout. But this season there will be twice the derby action, with all four teams competing at each event. Also, instead of three 20-minute periods, bouts will consist of two 30-minute periods.

One other change: At Saturday’s bout, there will be music. DJ Mullarkey and the Feel Good Revolution will be on hand.
If you can’t make it on Saturday, there’ll be another bout on March 15.
The league will hold bouts on the third Saturday of the month in June, July and August.
