An Arizona Department of Public Safety canine officer- and its canine- discovered 78 pounds of marijuana in a Douglas man's gas tank during a traffic stop east of Tucson on Thursday, authorities said.
At about 8:45 a.m., the officer stopped a white pickup truck heading westbound on Interstate 10 for a traffic violation.
During the stop, the officer noticed signs of possible criminal activity, according to a department news release. The canine alerted the officer to the area near the gas tank of the vehicle.
The truck was taken to DPS Tucson headquarters and the gas tank examined, where 56 packages of marijuana valued at $39,000 was discovered inside.
The driver, 37-year-old Arsenio Rodriguez-Convarrubias, was arrested and booked into Pima County jail on charges of possession of marijuana and transportation of marijuana for sale.
