A new bridge is being constructed on U.S. Highway 70 over the Gila River northwest of Safford.
The new concrete girder bridge will replace the steel-girder bridge, which was built in 1957. The bridge is west of the community of Bylas on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.
Work on the bridge, which will have wider lanes, emergency shoulders, walkways and other upgrades, will cost $12.7 million.
At nearly 2,000 feet in length, the new bridge will be one of the longest in Arizona. Construction is slated to be completed this fall.
