1820: First Tucson census puts population at 396.
1873: Vincente Hernandez, keeper of a general store and jewelry shop in Tucson, and his wife are beaten to death and robbed. Two days later a citizens committee hangs the murderers from the plaza's gallows.
1879: The first ice-making machine in Arizona begins operation in Tucson.
1992: Michael Bates, Amphitheater High School graduate and former University of Arizona football player, wins bronze medal in 200 meters at the Barcelona Olympics.
