An air conditioning unit caused an apartment fire at St. Johns Palms complex on the Tucson area's northwest side Monday night.
The fire at 2255 W. Orange Grove Road was reported at 8:17 p.m. and Northwest Fire District firefighters brought it under control at 8:30 p.m., said Capt. Adam Goldberg.
A 41-year-old woman and her 13-year-old son evacuated the apartment after they heard a loud popping noise and saw a glow coming from the air conditioning unit. No injuries were reported, Goldberg said.
Eight apartments were evacuated while firefighters put out the blaze, and all residents were allowed to return to their apartments, Goldberg said.
The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the one apartment. The woman and her son will be staying with a friend while repairs are completed, Goldberg said.
