1928, 1,500 ranchers, cowboys, politicians and other local citizens gather at Sasabe to celebrate the opening of the road to Tucson.
1962: President John F. Kennedy hails what was to be named the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope. "The great new solar telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona is a source of pride in this nation," Kennedy said.
1991: Actor Johnny Depp, who is in Southern Arizona filming a movie, is pulled over at 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 10 near Kino Pkwy. in Tucson for driving his 1991 black Porsche more than 100 mph in a 55-mph zone. Lacking identification, Depp is taken to the Pretrial Services office of Superior Court and then released after posting $305 bond.
