The large white scar on the Santa Rita Mountains has always been a curious sight to people driving on I-19, between Tucson and Green Valley, but back in the early 1970s, it was definite sore point. When the Santa Rita Mining Co. first began blasting limestone out of the western slope of the Santa Rita, local residents were vocal in their protests. However, mining laws at the time permitted the project. After only a few unprofitable years, operations there were suspended and the mining company was not required to restore the 200 acres of destroyed mountainside, shown here on Aug. 30, 1974.
