1890: The Arizona Republican begins publication in Phoenix and, 40 years later to the day, changes its name to the Arizona Republic.
1897: Anton Grossetta opens the Tucson Opera House.
1898: The first motion picture shown in Tucson, the 14-round Fitzsimmons-Corbett fight, plays at the Tucson Opera House.
1969: The Doors frontman Jim Morrison is arrested at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport after causing a ruckus on a flight. It seems Morrison and a friend had a bit too much to drink on the flight and acted inappropriately, even stealing all the soap from the lavatory, according to reports. The charges are later dropped.
2004: Former University of Arizona guard Mike Bibby's #10 jersey is retired in a special ceremony following a game against Sonoma State. In two seasons at the UA (1996-98), Bibby scored 1,061 career points — 25th on the team's career scoring list. He also led the Wildcats to the NCAA championship as a freshman, and to the Pac-10 Conference title as a sophomore. Bibby was drafted No. 2 by the Vancouver Grizzlies and is a 13-year veteran of the league.
