The director of TUSD’s multicultural curriculum department will take over Pueblo Magnet High School for the upcoming school year.
Augustine Romero was appointed principal of the south side school Tuesday with a 3-2 vote from the Tucson Unified School District Governing Board. Members Mark Stegeman and Michael Hicks opposed the appointment.
Pueblo, 3500 S. 12th Ave., is a C-rated school that serves more than 1,300 students, 90 percent of whom are Hispanic.
Romero has worked for TUSD for at least 15 years, serving as a coach, teacher and director of various departments including Mexican American Studies, student equity and most recently, multicultural curriculum.
Romero was named director of multicultural curriculum in 2012, earning more than $89,000 a year. At the time, his responsibilities included rewriting the K-12 social studies curriculum and ensuring that multicultural curriculum resources are included in all subject areas.
