The residents of Summerhaven expect the creeks to flow on the mountaintop after a storm, but they were getting a bit tired of the creek running down the middle of their small community. On Dec. 19, 1978, as he shouted to a reporter across the damaged area in front of the Alpine Lodge & Store, one resident said it was the third time that year the road had washed out. In addition to the flood damage, many of the homes were without electricity and water. The small grocery store was able to open with the aid of a kerosene lantern. After all, it was explained, the residents needed to be able to buy "the basics — milk, eggs, bread . . . and beer."
