Guests at a northwest side hotel were evacuated this afternoon after smoke from a malfunctioning elevator began to spread, authorities said.
The Northwest Fire District responded to the La Quinta Inn and Suites, 6020 W. Hospitality Road, near Cortaro Road and Interstate 10, after an automatic smoke alarm was activated, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire District spokesman.
Firefighters evacuated six people from the third floor of the hotel after smelling smoke, Goldberg said in a news release.
Fire crews searched the building and believed the smoke was caused by an elevator malfunction.
Hotel staff shut down the elevator until repairs could be made.
The guests were eventually allowed to return to their rooms.
