A former Tucson Police Department spokeswoman has lost her state certification for police work.
Maria Hawke lied about her educational background, according to an investigation report from the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board.
Hawke worked for TPD for about 13 years and achieved the rank of sergeant. Twice when applying for a promotion she said she had a bachelor’s degrees from the University of Arizona, but in truth she was a few classes short of being awarded a degree, according to the AZPOST report.
Lieutenants and higher ranking officials at TPD are required to have bachelor’s degrees.
TPD tried to fire Hawke in April, but she appealed and was allowed to resign instead of being fired. The AZPOST board voted unanimously last week to revoke Hawke’s certificate.
