Rural Metro firefighters rescued a woman who was swept away by fast-moving water at the third bridge in Upper Sabino Canyon on Sunday morning, said Chief John Walka, a spokesman with Rural Metro.
Water pushed a woman off the bridge and she went downstream for a while then clung to a tree, he said.
“We had a four-man crew go in the water about 30 feet in and put a life vest on the patient,” Walka said. “but she was too weak to move because of the cold and fast-moving water.”
It was then that a decision was made to bring in a helicopter to get her out of the water, he said.
The woman was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Rural Metro worked with the assistance of the Pima County Sheriff Department along with some members of the Southern Arizona Rescue.
