For devoted fans of "The Far Side" cartoon, it was a dark day indeed in 1994, when the panel's creator, Gary Larson, announced his retirement. But all was well on Nov. 1, 1983, when Larson was in Tucson to sign his new best-selling book "Beyond the Far Side" and hundreds of fans turned out to meet the man behind those weird cartoons. "I don't know where the ideas come from," Larson said. "Sometimes I feel I'm cursed." Cursed, possibly, but certainly well-read.
