Tucson fell 2 degrees shy of a record high on Thursday, but the extreme heat will continue through the early part of next week.
The high Thursday was 107, set at 3:10 p.m.; the record for the date is 109.
The National Weather Service said Saturday and Sunday could see record highs for Tucson. The service is forecasting 110 for Saturday and 109 for Sunday. The highs should drop to around 100 by Tuesday.
A high pressure system building to the east is causing the heat. The chance of rain remains slight, 10 to 20 percent, over the coming days.
The NWS has issued an excessive heat watch for Tucson and the surrounding region for 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Highs those days will range from 107 to 113 in Tucson and in the desert to the west and northwest of the metro region.

Records could fall beginning Friday. The record highs for the next three days are: 106, 109 and 108.
