Flags flying at half-staff

If you are driving around and notice the American or Arizona flags flying at half-staff, you may wonder why. Sure, you know when a former president has died, but sometimes these are done in memory of a tragic event.

For all of 2021, we are going to tell you when and why the flags for the United States of America, Arizona or any other state or territory of the U.S. are flown at half-staff.

The source for much of this information is FlagSteward.org

According to USFlag.org, which links to a copy of the United States Code, when the flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak and then lowered to half-staff. At sunset the flag should be raised back to full-staff and then lowered slowly all the way down.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff for the following office holders or former holders:

  • President of the United States or former president: 30 days from the date of death.
  • Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, retired Chief Justice or Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the date of death.
  • Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, President pro tempore of the Senate, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Minority Leader of the House: From the day of death until the date of interment.
  • Unites States Senator, Representative, Delegate or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: In the District of Columbia the flag will fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day, in the state, congressional district, territory or commonwealth of the deceased, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
  • Governor: Within the state, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in honor of former Alaska State Representative Ramona "Gail" Phillips.

March 30, 2021

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, March 30, 2021, in honor of the 100th birthday of the late former Alaska State Representative Katie Hurley.

March 29, 2021

Iowa: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Monday, March 29, 2021, in honor of correctional employees Lorena Schulte and Robert McFarland, who were killed in the line of duty.

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Monday, March 29, 2021, in honor of National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

March 28, 2021

New York: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Sunday, March 28, 2021, and ending at sunset, Wednesday, April 7, 2021, in honor of New York State Trooper Joseph Gallagher, who died from injuries sustained three years ago in the line of duty.

March 27, 2021

National: As ordered by the President of the United States, all U.S. flags and other flags flying where the U.S. flag is flown, will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, March 23, 2021, and ending at sunset Saturday, March 27, 2021, in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 22, 2021, in Boulder, Colorado.

Alabama: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities in Lawrence County will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 27, 2021, in honor of County Commissioner Joey Hargrove.

Colorado: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday March 27, 2021, in honor of Nucia Naturita Fire Protection District Chief Chester Riley.

Alaska: AS ordered by the Governor, all state flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 27, 2021, in honor of the Great Alaska Good Friday Earthquake Remembrance Day.

March 23, 2021 updated

National: As ordered by the President of the United States, all U.S. flags and other flags flying where the U.S. flag is flown, will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, March 23, 2021, and ending at sunset Saturday, March 27, 2021, in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 22, 2021, in Boulder, Colorado.

Colorado: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, March 23, 2021, and ending at sunset Thursday, April 1, 2021, in honor of the victims of the shooting at the King Soopers grocery store at the Table Mesa Shopping Center in Boulder.

March 22, 2021

National: As ordered by the President of the United States, all U.S. flags and other flags flying where the U.S. flag is flown, will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, March 18, 2021, and ending at sunset Monday, March 22, 2021, in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 16, 2021, in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

March 21, 2021

National: As ordered by the President of the United States, all U.S. flags and other flags flying where the U.S. flag is flown, will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, March 18, 2021, and ending at sunset Monday, March 22, 2021, in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 16, 2021, in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

Vermont: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, March 19, 2021 and on the 19th of every month, in honor of all Vermonters who have died of COVID-19.

Minnesota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, March 19, 2021 and on the 19th of every month, in honor of all Minnesota residents who have died of COVID-19.

March 18, 2021

National: As ordered by the President of the United States, all U.S. flags and other flags flying where the U.S. flag is flown, will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, March 18, 2021, and ending at sunset Monday, March 22, 2021, in honor of the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 16, 2021, in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

March 17, 2021

Guam: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Wednesday, March 17, 2021, and ending on the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of former Agat commissioner and WWII survivor Antonio R. Terlaje.

March 16, 2021

Hawaii: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, March 16, 2021, in honor of William Bains-Jordan, forst state representative of 'Aiea, upon Hawaii's statehood in 1959.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and at public facilities in Pasco County, Hillsborough County and the City Hall of Tampa, will fly at half-staff Tuesday, March 16, 2021, in honor of Tampa Police Department Officer Jesse Madsen, who was killed in the line of duty.

March 15, 2021

Wyoming: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags atop the state Capitol and at all government/public facilities across Johnson and Sheridan counties will fly at half-staff Monday, March 15, 2021, in honor of Douglas Osborn, formerly of the Wyoming House of Representatives.

March 14, 2021

Virginia: As ordered by the Governor, all Commonwealth (state) flags atop the State Capitol and at government/public facilities will fly at half-staff Sunday, March 14, 2021, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the first recorded death from COVID-19 in Virginia and the more than 9,900 Virginians who have died from COVID-19 as of March 12, 2021.

March 13, 2021

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and other locations specified will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 13, 2021, in honor of former Winter Haven Mayor Lemuel Geathers

South Carolina: As ordered by the Governor, all flags across the state will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 13, 2021, in honor of Chief William Edward McNeill Jr., of the Campobello Fire Department, who died in the line of duty.

Alabama: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 13, 2021, in honor of the more than 10,000 Alabamians who have died of COVID-19.

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at the State Capitol Complex will fly at half-staff Thursday, March 11, 2021, in honor of former State Senator John "Jack" Welborn.

Texas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities in Victoria County will fly at half-staff until sunset, Friday, March 12, 2021, in honor of Victoria Mayor Rawley McCoy.

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, March 20, 2021, in honor of the one-year anniversary of the coronavirus in Michigan and those who have died.

Pennsylvania: As ordered by the Governor, all Commonwealth (state) flags at public facilities in Northumberland County will fly at half-staff beginning March 10, 2021, and ending at sunset Saturday, March 13, 2021, in honor of Deputy Fire Chief Kevin (Bubba) Malukas, of the Coal Township Fire Department, who died in the line of duty.

March 8, 2021

Indiana: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities in Madison County will fly at half-staff Monday, March 8, 2021, in honor of former Indiana Auditor of State Otis Cox.

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Monday, March 8, 2021, in honor of former Alaska State Legislator John Sackett.

Navajo Nation: As ordered by the President of the Navajo Nation, all flags at all Navajo Nation facilities will fly at half-staff Monday, March 8, 2021, in honor of former Navajo Nation Supreme Court Associate Justice Lorene B. Ferguson, who died from COVID-19 complications.

March 7, 2021

Indiana: As ordered by the Governor, all flags in at public facilities in Washington County will fly at half-staff Sunday, March 7, 2021, in honor of U.S. Air Force First Lieutenant Scot Wayne Ames Jr., who was killed in an aircraft training crash.

California: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Saturday, March 6, 2021, in honor of Los Angeles Police Officer Jose Anzora, who was killed in the line of duty.

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and at public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Saturday, March 6, 2021, and ending at sunset, Saturday, March 20, 2021, in honor of former Michigan Attorney General Frank J. Kelley.

March 5, 2021

Maryland: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, March 5, 2021, in honor of COVID-19 Day of Remembrance and the 7,700 Marylanders who have died from COVID-19.

New Mexico: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Friday, March 5, 2021, and ending at sunset Sunday, March 7, 2021, in honor of form state lawmaker Ed Sandoval of Bernalillo County.

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, March 5, 2021, in honor of Madion Heights Fire Captain Jeffrey Brozich.

Georgia: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and across Decatur County will fly at half-staff Thursday, March 4, 2021, in honor of Captain Justin Williams Bedwell of the Decatur County Sheriff's Office.

Virginia: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff Thursday, March 4, 2021, in honor of Stanley, Va., Police Officer Dominic "Nick" Winum.

Nevada: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags atop the State Capitol and at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, March 4, 2021, and ending at sunset Friday, March 5, 2021, in honor of the more than 5,000 Nevadans who have died from COVID-19.

March 3, 2021

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, March 3, 2021, in honor of former Alaska State Representative and House Speaker Mike Bradner.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, March 3, 2021, in honor of victims and families impacted by COVID-19.

March 1, 2021
