If you are driving around and notice the American or Arizona flags flying at half-staff, you may wonder why. Sure, you know when a former president has died, but sometimes these are done in memory of a tragic event.

For all of 2021, we are going to tell you when and why the flags for the United States of America, Arizona or any other state or territory of the U.S. are flown at half-staff.

The source for much of this information is FlagSteward.org

According to USFlag.org, which links to a copy of the United States Code, when the flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak and then lowered to half-staff. At sunset the flag should be raised back to full-staff and then lowered slowly all the way down.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff for the following office holders or former holders:

  • President of the United States or former president: 30 days from the date of death.
  • Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, retired Chief Justice or Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the date of death.
  • Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, President pro tempore of the Senate, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Minority Leader of the House: From the day of death until the date of interment.
  • Unites States Senator, Representative, Delegate or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: In the District of Columbia the flag will fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day, in the state, congressional district, territory or commonwealth of the deceased, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
  • Governor: Within the state, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

Sept. 12, 2021

Ohio: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, the Rhodes State Office Tower and across Erie will fly at half-staff beginning Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, and ending at sunset Monday, Sept. 13, 2021, in honor of U.S. Navy Hospitalman (Corpsman) Maxton W. Soviak, of berlin Heights, who was killed in the terrorist attack at Kabul airport.

Massachusetts: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Sunday, Sept. 12, 2021, and ending at sunset Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Johanny Rosario Pichardio, of Lawrence, Mass., who was killed during the terrorist attack at Kabul Airport Aug. 26.

Arkansas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2021, in honor of U.S. Air Force Pilot Lieutenant Henry Donald Mitchell of Harmon, who disappeared July 8, 1944. His remains were recently identified through DNA analysis and brought home for a proper burial.

Sept. 11, 2021

National: The United States flag is half-staff across the country and its territories in observance of Patriot Day (9/11), honoring the individuals who died Sept. 11, 2001, and the military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed.

Tennessee: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and at all state / public facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, in honor of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Knauss of Corryton. SSG Knauss was killed in a terrorist attack at the Kabul airport Aug. 26.

Ohio: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, the Rhodes State Office Tower and across Brown County will fly at half-staff Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, in honor of Ohio State Representative Doug Green.

Sept. 10, 2021

Washington: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, in honor of former Colfax Fire Chief and Volunteer Firefighter Jim Krouse, 76, who died in the line of duty.

Nebraska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, and ending at sunset Friday, Sept. 17, 2021, in honor of Marine Corporal Daegan Page, who was killed in the terrorist attack at Kabul airport.

Sept. 9, 2021

Oregon: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities will fly at half-staff Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, in honor of U.S. Forest Service contract firefighter Frumencio Ruiz Carapia, who was killed while working to contain the Gales fire in Lane County.

Sept. 8, 2021

Oklahoma: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, in honor of former state lawmaker Charles R. Ford.

Kansas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags in the City of Overland Park will fly at half-staff Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, in honor of Overland Park Police Officer Freddie Castro, who died from COVID-19-related medical complications.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the state Capitol and at public facilities at the Volusia County Courthouse and the City Hall of Port Orange will fly at half-staff Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, in honor of former Circuit Judge Steven C. Henderson.

New Jersey: All flags at public/government facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, and ending at sunset Friday, Sept. 10, 2021 in honor of the 27 individuals who have dies and the four who remain missing in the wake of Tropical Storm Ida.

Sept. 7, 2021

Pennsylvania: As ordered by the Governor, all Commonwealth (state) flags at state facilities in Washington County will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, and ending at sunset Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, in honor of Fire Police Captain Laron Holcomb of the Ellsworth Volunteer Fire Department.

Texas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at Gonzales County government and public facilities and the Texas flag at all DPS facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2021, and ending at sunset Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021, in honor of Gonzales County Sheriff Robert Yncian, who died of COVID-19 complications while in office.

South Carolina: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021, in honor of Lucille Simmons Whipper, and educator and member of the South Carolina House of Representatives.

New Jersey: All flags at public / government facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, in honor of Berkeley Township Beach Patrol Lifeguard Keith Pinto, who was fatally injured by a lightning strike while on duty.

California: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, in honor of Correctional Lieutenant Robert "Bobby" Travelstead of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, who died of a COVID-19 related illness contracted while on duty.

Connecticut: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, and ending at sunset on the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Connecticut State Police Sergeant Brian Mohl, who died while responding to severe flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Ohio: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, in honor of Ohio Overdose Awareness Day.

Delaware: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, in honor of Overdose Awareness Day.

Iowa: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, in honor of U.S. Navy Fireman 1st Class Wesley J. Brown, who was killed at Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government/public facilities will fly at half-staff Monday, aug. 23, 2021, in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Dale W. Wright, a Korean War Fallen Soldier whose remains were recently identified.

Pennsylvania: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, and ending at sunset Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, in honor of Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone.
