This is where flags flew at half-staff in February

If you are driving around and notice the American or Arizona flags flying at half-staff, you may wonder why. Sure, you know when a former president has died, but sometimes these are done in memory of a tragic event.

For all of 2020, we are going to tell you when and why the flags for the United States of America or Arizona are flown at half-staff. We'll also toss in those notices for other states as well.

According to USFlag.org, which links to a copy of the United States Code, when the flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak and then lowered to half-staff. At sunset the flag should be raised back to full-staff and then lowered slowly all the way down.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff for the following office holders or former holders:

• President of the United States or former president: 30 days from the date of death.
• Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, retired Chief Justice or Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the date of death.
• Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, President pro tempore of the Senate, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Minority Leader of the House: From the day of death until the date of interment.
• Unites States Senator, Representative, Delegate or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: In the District of Columbia the flag will fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day, in the state, congressional district, territory or commonwealth of the deceased, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
• Governor: Within the state, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

Arizona: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, the date of his interment, in honor of White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday, Feb. 17.

New Hampshire: By order of the Governor, all flags at all state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, the date of his interment, in honor of Captain Ryan S. Phaneuf of Hudson, N.H., who was killed in a plane crash Monday, Jan. 27, while serving in Afghanistan.

Florida: All flags atop the Wilton Manors City Hall and across the city will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of mayor Justin Flippen, who died unexpectedly at age 41.

Wisconsin: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, in memory of the victims of the Molson Coors plant shooting on Feb. 26.

Florida: By order of the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol, the Okaloosa County Courthouse and Fort Walton Beach City Hall will fly at half-staff until sunset Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, in honor of former House Representative Jerry Melvin.

Cherokee Nation: All flags across the Cherokee Nation will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of former Deputy Chief Joe Grayson.

South Carolina: All flags in Sumter County will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Corporal Andrew Gillette, of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020.

St. Louis, Missouri: All flags atop the St. Louis City Hall will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Samuel Moore, the 4th Ward Alderman (City Council member).

Flint, Michigan: All flags atop City Hall in Flint will fly at half-staff until sunset Friday, Feb. 28, 2020, in honor of Richard Dicks Sr., the first Flint "Super Chief," Chief of Police and Fire Department.

Maryland: All flags in Charles County will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Charles County Government employee and North Point student Bradley A. Brown.

Texas: By order of the Governor, all flags atop the state Capitol will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, in honor of Sergeant First Class Javier Gutierrez, who lost his life during an attack in Afghanistan.

Indiana: By order of the Governor, all flags across Hancock County will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, in honor of former state representative Nicholas Gulling.

California: By order of the Governor, all flags atop the Capitol will fly at half-staff Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, in honor of Porterville Fire Department Captain Raymond Figueroa and Firefighter Patrick Jones, who died while battling a fire at the Porterville Library Tuesday.

New Mexico: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, in honor of SFC Antonio Rey Rodriguez, the Las Cruces soldier who was killed in the line of duty in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province.

North Carolina: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset Friday, Feb. 21, 2020, in honor of North Carolina House of Representatives member Linda Johnson who died Tuesday.

California: All flags in Porterville and firehouses throughout the state will fly at half-staff until the dates of their interments in honor of Porterville Fire Department Captain Raymond Figueroa and Firefighter Patrick Jones, who died while battling a fire at the Porterville Library Tuesday.

Jacksonville, Florida: All flags at government buildings in Jacksonville will fly at half-staff Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, in honor of former Jacksonville Mayor Jake Goldbold.

Arizona: By order of Governor Doug Ducey, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020 in honor of the life and service of White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Monday, Feb. 17, 2020.

North Carolina: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset Feb. 19, 2020, in honor of former North Carolina Lt. Governor Robert "Bob" Jordan, who died Sunday.

Colorado: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Feb. 17, 2020, in honor of West Metro Fire & Rescue Firefighter/Paramedic Dan Moran, who died of a line of duty related cancer.

New Bedford, Massachusetts: All flags at city facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of her interment (TBD) in honor of former New Bedford Mayor Rosemary Tierney, who served from 1992-1998.

Florida: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, for Marjory Stoneman Douglas Remembrance Day, as a sign of respect for the victims of the shooting at Parkland High School two years ago.

New York: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, in honor of Spc. Branden Tyme Kimball, a Fort Drum soldier who died in Afghanistan Feb. 12.

Florida: By order of the Governor, all flags at the Florida State Capitol, Bradenton City Hall, Sarasota County building and all Florida Highway Patrol buildings will fly at half-staff Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, in honor of Florida State Highway Patrol Trooper Joseph Bullock, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Nevada: By order of the Governor, all flags will fly at half-staff at the Capitol and state facilities until sunset Feb. 14, 2020, in honor of former Lt. Governor and Reno's former Mayor Bob Cashell.

Washougal, Washington: City flags at city buildings will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment to honor former mayor George "Jeff" Guard who died Feb. 4, 2020.

North Carolina: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset Feb. 16, 2020, in honor of Sgt. Javier Jaguar Gutierrez, who died while serving his country in Afghanistan.

Alaska: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, in honor of Willow Firefighter Roger Delongchamp who died in the line of duty Jan. 18.

Wisconsin: By order of the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Feb. 8, 2020, as a mark of respect for Firefighter Darrin Jones of the Milwaukee Fire Department who died from a line of duty-related illness Feb. 1, 2020.

West Virginia: By order of the Governor, all flags atop the West Virginia Capitol Complex and state facilities across Logan County will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, in remembrance of former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates Ted Ellis.

South Dakota: By order of the Governor, all flags atop the South Dakota State Capitol Complex will fly at half-staff Saturday, Feb. 8, 2020, in honor of Bernie Christenson, former state leaders and legislator.

Florida: All flags at Florida State Highway Patrol buildings will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment in honor of Florida State Highway Patrol Trooper Joseph Bullock, who was shot and killed in the line of duty Feb. 5, 2020.

New Jersey: All flags in Woodbridge township buildings will fly at half-staff Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, in honor of former Mayor Philip Cerria, who died recently.

Maryland: All flags across Harford County at county buildings will fly at half-staff until sunset Feb. 10, 2020 in honor of Senior Deputy Dailey and Deputy Logsdon, who were killed in the line of duty Feb. 10, 2016.

Kimberly, Alabama: All flags at city facilities will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment in honor of Kimberly Police Officer Nick O'Rear, who was shot and killed in the line of Duty Feb. 5.

Texas: By order of the Governor, all flags across Liberty County, with other Texas counties and cities authorized to join, will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment in honor of Liberty County Deputy Richard Whitten, who died from complications of a gunshot wound sustained in the line of duty last year.

Navajo Nation: By order of the President of the Navajo Nation, all flags across the Nation will fly at half-staff from Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2020, until sunset Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, in honor of Navajo Code Talker Joe Vandever Sr., World War II Marine Corps veteran and Congressional Silver Medal recipient who passed away recently at the age of 96.

Virginia: By order of the Governor, all flags throughout the state will fly at half-staff Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, in memory of Newport News Police Officer Katherine M. "Katie" Thyne.

Corpus Christi, Texas: With approval of the Governor and as ordered by the Mayor, all flags across Corpus Christi and other counties and cities who wish to join, will fly at half-staff until sunset on the date of his interment in honor of Corpus Christi Police Officer Alan McCollum.

West Hollywood, California: All flags at city facilities will fly at half-staff until sunrise Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, in honor of Jeanne Dorbin, the "Grand Dame of WeHo," who died recently at the age of 99.
