Flags flying at half-staff

The American Flag and Arizona Flag lay at half staff, in front of Pima County Public Service Center, for White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood, in Tucson, Ariz. on February 18, 2020. Officer Kellywood was killed in the line of duty in a shooting in the early morning of February 17, 2020, according to Navajo County Sheriff's Office.

If you are driving around and notice the American or Arizona flags flying at half-staff, you may wonder why. Sure, you know when a former president has died, but sometimes these are done in memory of a tragic event.

For all of 2020, we are going to tell you when and why the flags for the United States of America or Arizona are flown at half-staff. We'll also toss in those notices for other states as well.

The source for much of this information is FlagSteward.org

According to USFlag.org, which links to a copy of the United States Code, when the flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak and then lowered to half-staff. At sunset the flag should be raised back to full-staff and then lowered slowly all the way down.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff for the following office holders or former holders:

  • President of the United States or former president: 30 days from the date of death.
  • Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, retired Chief Justice or Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the date of death.
  • Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, President pro tempore of the Senate, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Minority Leader of the House: From the day of death until the date of interment.
  • Unites States Senator, Representative, Delegate or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: In the District of Columbia the flag will fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day, in the state, congressional district, territory or commonwealth of the deceased, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
  • Governor: Within the state, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

June 30, 2020

Arizona: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, June 30, 2020, in honor of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots who died fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire in 2013.

June 29, 2020

Rhode Island: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff from Monday, July 29, 2020, until sunset Wednesday July 1, 2020, in honor of former Newport Mayor Paul Gaines.

Texas: All flags at government and public facilities in Fort Bend County will fly at half-staff in honor of city of Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella.

June 27, 2020

Massachusetts: All flags at city facilities in Salem will fly at half-staff until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Salem Police Officer Dana Mazola who was killed in a crash June 25, 2020.

June 24, 2020

Massachusetts: All flags at city facilities in Westfield will fly t half-staff until Friday, June 26, 2020, in honor of longtime City Solicitor Susan C. Philips.

Navajo Nation: As ordered by the Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, all flags across the Navajo Nation will fly at half-staff from Wednesday, June 24, 2020, until sunset Thursday, June 25, 2020, in honor of Navajo Police Department Officer Michael Lee, who died of COVID-19 complications.

June 23, 2020

Maine: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff from Tuesday, June 23, 2020, until sunset Thursday, June 25, 2020, in honor of former Speaker of the House and former Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development John Richardson.

June 21, 2020

Ohio: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, Rhodes Tower and across Geauga County (other state facilities are invited to follow) will fly at half-staff from Sunday, June 21, 2020, until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of U.S. Marine Sergeant Wolfgang Kyle Weninger, who died recently during parachute jump training.

June 20, 2020

Arizona: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, June 20, 2020, in honor of Navajo Police Department Officer Michael Lee, who died of COVID-19 complications.

June 19, 2020

Vermont: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff on the 19th day of each month until the end of 2020, in honor of those who have died from COVID-19.

Minnesota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff on the 19th day of each month until the end of 2020, in honor of those who have died from COVID-19.

Illinois: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff on the 19th day of each month until the end of 2020, in honor of those who have died from COVID-19, concurrent with declaring June 19, 2020, as Junteenth in Illinois.

South Dakota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, June 19, 2020, in honor of Sioux Falls Fire Captain Kendall Ward, who died of work-related cancer.

New Mexico: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff from Friday, June 19, 2020, until sunset Saturday, June 20, 2020, to commemorate Juneteenth and to acknowledge victims of racism and hate in New Mexico and America.

June 17, 2020

Mississippi: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government or public facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, June 17, 2020, in honor of Deputy Sheriff James H. Blair of the Simpson County Sheriff's Office.

June 12, 2020

Michigan: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government and public facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, June 12, 2020, in honor of Monroe County Sheriff's animal control officer Darrian Young, who was killed June 6 when her patrol car was struck by another vehicle.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government and public facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, June 12, 2020, in honor of Pulse Remembrance Day, the fourth anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting.

June 11, 2020

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, All flags atop the State Capitol, the Hillsborough County Courthouse and City Hall of Tampa will fly at half-staff from Thursday, June 10, 2020 until sunset June 11, 2020, in honor of former Florida House Speaker Thomas Terrell Sessums, who died June 6.

June 10, 2020

Missouri: As ordered by the Governor, all flags across Dekalb County at public facilities will fly at half-staff Wednesday, June 10, 2020, in honor of Sheriff Andy Clark of Dekalb County Sheriff's Office who died in the line of duty June 3.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol, Miami-Dade Courthouse and City Hall of Miami will fly at half-staff Thursday, June 10, 2020, in honor of former Florida Senate President Gwen Margolis, who died June 9.

June 8, 2020

California: All flags at public facilities in Santa Cruz County will fly at half-staff from June 8, 2020, until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

June 6, 2020

South Carolina: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Saturday, June 6, 2020 in honor of First Lieutenant Trevarius Ravon Bowman, South Carolina National Guard who was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

North Carolina: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags will fly at half-staff Saturday, June 6, 2020, in honor of George Floyd, a North Carolina native killed in police custody in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Utah: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, June 6, 2020, in honor of Officer Nate Lyday of the Ogden Police Department, who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

June 4, 2020

New Mexico: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff from Thursday, June 4, 2020, until sunset Friday, June 5, 2020, in honor of George Floyd and all other victims of systemic racism and police violence.

June 3, 2020

California: All flags across Riverside County at government facilities will fly at half-staff from Wednesday, June 3, 2020 until sunset Monday, June 8, 2020, in honor of Riverside County Supervisor Patricia "Corky" Larson.

Alabama: All flags in Moody, Alabama, at public facilities will fly at half-staff from June 3, 2020, until the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Sergeant Stephen Williams of the Moody Police Department who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

June 2, 2020

North Dakota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in honor of Grand Forks Police Officer Cody Holte, who died in the line of duty Wednesday in a fatal shooting.

June 1, 2020

North Carolina: As ordered by the Governor, state flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Monday June 1, 2020 in honor of those who lost their lives to COVID-19.

Alabama: Flags of the city of Birmingham will fly at half-staff until a date to be determined in honor of George Floyd.

Texas: All flags at government and public facilities in Fort Bend County will fly at half-staff un the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of Deputy Constable Caleb Rule who was killed in the line of duty May 29, 2020.
