A pregnant Tucson woman who was shot in the back of the head last week has died and the father of her unborn child is jailed in connection with the killing, authorities say.
About 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Anisa Linette Moreno, 26, was found shot in a bedroom of her home near East 36th Street and South Kino Parkway, Tucson police said Sunday in a news release. She’d survived been shot once in the back of the head, according to an initial complaint filed in Pima County Justice Court.
Bariki Hopkins, 36, initially said he knew nothing about the shooting at the home they shared.
He then told investigators a a random attacker was the shooter.
“An unknown male pushed open the bedroom door brandishing a firearm. The male immediately shot once, striking Anisa in the head,” the complaint says of Hopkins’ account. “The male did not say anything and immediately fled after shooting.”

Hopkins went on to tell investigators he did know if the home’s front door was locked prior to the shooting. Nor did he provide investigators with a possible motive for the attack.
Investigators noted there were no signs of forced entry into the home.
A neighbor told investigators that she heard Moreno and Hopkins arguing prior to the shooting. She told investigators she could hear a woman say, “I want to go to sleep,” and “You’re hurting me.” The neighbor also said she heard furniture moving followed by “a loud noise.” The neighbor later called 911.
Moreno, who was reportedly 15 weeks pregnant, died Saturday at the hospital after being taken off life support, authorities say.
Hopkins was arrested soon after the shooting. His charges at the Pima County jail were expected to be amended to two counts of second-degree murder, police said in the release.
