• May 18, 2007 — Gonzales indicted on first-degree murder. Prosecutors later announce they are seeking the death penalty for her as well.
• Feb. 16, 2008 — Hallam files lawsuit against state of Arizona and Tucson Police Department.
• June 2008 — The state agrees to pay Hallam $1 million to settle its portion of the lawsuit.
• Aug. 25, 2008 — Gonzales pleads guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and agrees to testify against Payne. She is guaranteed a 22-year prison sentence.
• Feb. 25, 2009 — Opening statements in Payne's trial.
