Witnesses kept a 75-year-old man from drowning Sunday night when his car rolled over roof-side down in a Marana irrigation ditch.
He was in stable condition, Northwest Fire District officials said.
The rollover occurred about 7 p.m. off Interstate 10 near Milepost 239, said Katy Heiden, spokeswoman for the Northwest Fire/Rescue District.
Water filled the car, and when witnesses arrived, the man's head was underwater as he struggled to pull himself up, Heiden said. The bystanders got into the water, undid his seat belt and held his head above water until emergency workers arrived. He was taken to University Medical Center with unknown injuries.
The names of the victim and the rescuers were unavailable Sunday night.
