Chronic absenteeism has been an issue for most school districts since the COVID-19 pandemic.
While Tucson Unified and Sunnyside Unified school districts are nearly double the state’s average chronic absenteeism rate, Marana Unified School District has experienced a drop from 44% in the 2021-2022 school year to 28% in 2024-2025.
Marana Superintendent Dan Streeter said that while the drop has been significant, it still remains a top priority moving into this school year.
“This is my No. 1 concern going into this next school year,” Streeter said. “We're seeing dramatic impacts on student achievement.”
