Editor's note: Standardized testing season is now getting under way in Tucson schools. To help schoolchildren prepare, for six weeks the BYOBrain page will feature practice questions. Kathie Josephs, language arts teacher and testing coordinator at Townsend Middle School, presents sample questions for a range of age groups in this six-week series, AIM High.
That seven-letter word is creeping up on everyone - TESTING! As a teacher and test coordinator, I don't sleep well this time of year.
I worry that I haven't covered everything I was suppose to. I wonder if my students have learned what I tried to teach them. I start thinking about what I should have done differently.
This can become a stressful situation for everyone, but the fact is that tests are here to stay. The state standards have been rewritten to align the standards with the assessments. Teachers like me need to remember that by doing our job well and following the standards, our students will learn.

To review for any test, teachers often use class time to cover the important information; however, reviewing for the entire year could take more time than we have. Mini-reviews can be a great tool for testing preparation.
Below are some practice questions for grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 that are appropriate for mini-reviews of skills. All questions meet the state standards. If teachers give students questions each day to write in a review notebook, the notebooks will end up with a wealth of information for students to take home and re-review prior to the test.
