The stars aligned last week at the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association's beginning astronomy workshop.
The association held a Family Astronomy Night on Dec. 20 at the Murphy-Wilmot Library, 530 N. Wilmot Road. The workshops are held every third Tuesday of the month at various libraries around town.
The event proved to be equally accessible for both parents and children. Inside the library, astronomy association member Brian O'Connell led a hands-on presentation about the solar system for children. Meanwhile Jim Miller supervised three telescopes on the lawn behind the library.
One of the highlights visible through the telescopes was Jupiter and four of its moons. Spotty cloud cover made for unfavorable viewing conditions, but families were still able to witness spectacular sights.
The event is part of the association's effort to reach out to the public. The organization hopes the Family Astronomy Nights will generate interest among participants and encourage them to become members of its Family Observing Program.
